New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is excited by the concept of taxing the rich in New York to fund his progressive agenda.
One of the cornerstones of Mamdani’s successful campaign was the promise to increase taxes on the state’s rich to fund social projects that he believes will turn the city into a progressive utopia. Speaking to Kristin Welker on Meet the Press, he explained that the pied-à-terre tax is a revenue stream that has not yet been successful in the state, but he’s hoping that will change under his leadership. Because what will encourage people to invest in New York, quite like a non-primary resident tax?

Mamdani says it’s exciting to tax wealthy New Yorkers:
“I’ve always said that I believe in the importance of taxing the rich. This is taxing the rich.”

“Is the pied-à-terre tax an acknowledgment that you can’t get a broader tax on the wealthy here in New York, which is what you promised and how you said you would pay for all of these programs?” Welker asked.
“I always said that I believe in the importance of taxing the rich. This is taxing the rich,” he said. “And I said that the two ways that I thought were the most straightforward of doing so, a personal income tax, corporate tax, those were the two ways that I thought we could achieve it in the most straightforward manner. Part of that is a reflection of the fact that a pied-à-terre tax has been something that has long been fought for in this city, but hasn’t been possible to get over the finish line. It’s been really exciting to work with the governor to win something that many thought would never have a chance.”

This will be challenged in court. Good luck with it not being reversed.

And the mass exodus will continue. Texas and Florida will be waiting with open arms for these companies.

I wonder how many “rich” people actually voted for this asshat and if they are experiencing buyer’s remorse.

Does that include his rich parents, his wife and himself? I highly doubt it!
