In May 2025, 54-year-old Mexican national Ramón Morales-Reyes was arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after he’d allegedly mailed a letter threatening to kill President Donald Trump. Friday, 52-year-old Demetric Scott was the one heading to prison for over 16 years after he’d been convicted of setting up Morales-Reyes, the stabbing victim, in a bicycle robbery Scott maintained he never committed.
“It was clear, and it still is clear to me today that you only care about yourself,” said Milwaukee County Circuit Court Judge Kristy Yang during Friday’s sentencing hearing, where Scott received a combined 16.5 years of incarceration plus 13 years of supervision, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. “You went to great lengths to advance your own self interests.”
“And you even stated in open court your disdain for the victim and how you still wanted the victim deported. It’s such a shame that you would feel like that and have so much hate,” she added to Scott, who had represented himself at trial for eight felony charges, of which he was found not guilty for the alleged crimes of armed robbery with use of force and aggravated battery with intent to cause bodily harm.
As had been ICE had arrested Morales-Reyes after a field intelligence officer had received the letter he’d allegedly penned that read in part, “We are tired of this president messing with us Mexicans. We have done more for this country than you white people — you have been deporting my family and I think it is time Donald J. Trump get what he has coming to him. I will self deport myself back to Mexico but not before I … shoot your precious president.”

That letter was determined to have been composed by Scott while in jail, who was said to have believed the letter would result in the illegal alien being deported, preventing the man from testifying against him. The high profile of the case led the prosecution to call for severe penalties to prevent other defendants from attempting similar stunts in cases involving illegal aliens as a means to circumvent their testimony.
Meanwhile, Noem had praised the work of ICE following the arrest of the Mexican national, stating at the time, “Thanks to our ICE officers, this illegal alien who threatened to assassinate President Trump is behind bars.”
“This threat comes not even a year after President Trump was shot in Butler, Pennsylvania, and less than two weeks after former FBI Director Comey called for the President’s assassination,” the secretary continued.
Prior to his latest conviction, Scott’s record included serving a five-year sentence for second-degree recklessly endangering safety — downgraded from felony murder — after a fight with a man over the price of a coat for sale sent the victim to the hospital, where he died. While Scott claimed the man hit his head after falling in response to a punch, a witness told police they saw the convict punching and kicking the victim in the head.
