Manhunt underway after shooting near Navy Yard rattles D.C.

There was a reported shooting Thursday evening near the Navy Yard in Washington, D.C., although there appears to have been no injuries or arrests — police reportedly recovered a firearm and are seeking a black teenage male suspect who remains at large.

Independent journalist Nick Sortor shared an eyewitness account on X, saying there was an “armored Chevrolet Suburban used by leaders of Congress and members of the President’s cabinet” at the scene.

“Heavily armed US Capitol Police officers are RACING to a reported shooting in the vicinity of a high-ranking US government official in Washington, DC’s Navy Yard,” Sortor posted. “The black SUV seen in the video is an armored Chevrolet Suburban used by leaders of Congress and members of the President’s cabinet.”

“It is UNCLEAR if this was a targeted attack, but the alleged shooter is NOT in custody, and police are searching the area,” he added. “I personally witnessed that official be EXTRACTED via undercover Capitol Police officers, protected by uniformed officers carrying long rifles. I will not name the official without their express permission, as I don’t want to dox their home. Other officers can be seen sweeping the area for evidence like shell casings.”

Video shared online shows U.S. Capitol Police responding with long rifles.

Trump administration officials living in secure military housing at Fort McNair and Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling, which is near the Navy Yard, include Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

Vice President JD Vance and his family live on the grounds of the United States Naval Observatory, which is a separate facility several miles away from the Navy Yard.

Fox News reported on what police called a “juvenile takeover” of the Navy Yard last month, noting that “teens swarmed DC’s Navy Yard… turning the upscale spot into chaos with fights, robberies, and gunfire.”

Here are a few responses to the story, as seen on X:
