A tense showdown between a reporter and Maui Mayor Richard Bissen sent social media into over-drive.
The reporter was trying to figure out how many children were reported missing following the Lahaina fire. This is information that any rational person would believe the government has, even if the number may not be complete or final.
However, Mayor Bissen appeared to be uninterested in sharing the information with the media, even threatening to end the interview as the disbelieving reporter pressed him for a number.

The bizarre, seemingly indifferent response to the question of missing children shocked X, formerly known as Twitter. Users proposed many theories to explain the behavior:
He didn’t expect to be challenged when he waltzed in there. They expect us to be grateful to the almighty government officials just gracing victims with their 20-minute photo opp

Wow. Terrible display of arrogance with zero compassion.

Right!? Even if you don’t want to specify you at least throw out the generic responses….we don’t know the exact total, we searching tirelessly, we are doing everything we can, resources are limited, Yada Yada yada……his refusal to answer is and should be concerning.

They know how many, they’re scared shitless to say it out loud. The Maui Mayor appointed the incompetent Emergency Mgr as a political payback and the DLR Water head added to the deaths with his equity ideology. What’s “Equity” got to do with people dying?

Is it a secret? I don’t get this. Question is pretty clear
— Grandpa Earpiece (@EarpieceGrandpa) August 21, 2023
Exactly. Either the answer then is, at best absurd incompetence or worse active attempts to distract and omit information. Lies by omission are still lies

Something is rotten in Maui.

Something very terrible concerning the native children is my guess. I grow more convinced of this as time passes.
