An all-too common refrain from Democrats when it comes to calls to shutter the border and deport illegal aliens to their nation of origin is that functional national sovereignty is somehow racist against Hispanics. Friday, during an interview on CNN’s “The Situation Room,” Bass took that argument to new lows when she decried the record number of U.S. Customs and Border Protection recruits that included many Hispanics proud of their service to the United States.

After running a report from David Culver that found about half of Border Patrol agents along the southwest border identified as Hispanic or Latino. CNN’s Wolf Blitzer asked the mayor to weigh in on the record recruitments.

“Well, in a way, I think it’s sad. I think that those Border Patrol agents are going to have a difficult time when they’re out in the field, and they see what actually happens in real life separate from their training,” she responded, alluding to the narrative of the left that immigration enforcement is somehow inhumane and in violation of rights.

As the report made note of the financial incentives that had attracted many to join the mission to secure the border, in addition to the goal of ending drug trafficking and enforcing the law, Bass twisted the monetary rewards into an argument against the economy without noting that both the border crisis and affordability issues were directly related to former President Joe Biden and her party’s policies.

Juxtaposed against the mayor’s shaming, Border Patrol Agent Claudio Herrera detailed how his journey to citizenship took 11 years and told CNN that he wasn’t “ashamed” of his career. “I’m protecting my community. I’m protecting both sides of the border.”

Likewise, recruit Juan Peralta told the outlet he responds to those challenging him with the notion that he is arresting his “own kind” by saying, “They didn’t come in the right way, so they aren’t my kind.”

Among those chiding Bass only days after she’d been slammed for fearmongering about families that don’t “feel safe leaving their homes to participate in holiday traditions,” the Department of Homeland Security’s X account was quick to put the mayor in her place.

“Mayor Karen Bass’ comments only reveal how detached she is from reality and how averse she is to the rule of law and public safety. The patriotic men and women joined Border Patrol because they want to defend our homeland, help secure our borders, and catch drug traffickers, gang members, pedophiles, rapists, and murderers trying to illegally enter our country,” read a DHS post sharing a snippet of the interview. “Mayor Bass should stop race-baiting for media clicks and start thanking our law enforcement for making California communities safe again–something she refuses to do.”
