A government solution to a government problem saw thousands of dollars being handed over to illegal aliens to see them move out of the New York City shelter system.
After getting put up in luxury Manhattan hotels, provided with daily meals and even refillable debit cards preloaded with funds, it appeared the Big Apple was setting its sights on expanding a pilot program to pay foreign nationals to line up for a different handout.
Initially launched in December 2023 by the NYC Department of Homeless Services (DHS), a spokesperson for the Department of Social Services confirmed to Fox News Digital that 150 illegal alien families had been provided $4,000 each toward garnering permanent housing through the Asylee Moveout Assistance (AMA) program.
“The city is using every tool at its disposal to implement innovative and cost-effective solutions to help recently-arrived asylum seekers residing in shelters take the next steps in their journey,” the spokesperson detailed. “Since December, DSS has been working with a few not-for-profit providers operating emergency sites to pilot a new effort to reduce barriers to obtaining housing by helping asylum-seeking families who have identified permanent housing with the upfront cost of moving into their new home.”
One hundred fifty households “have benefitted from this pilot over the last seven months, and we look forward to supporting more households as we assess the success of the pilot and feasibility of scaling up and expanding access to this form of assistance,” Fox News Digital was told of the program based on the city’s existing Enhanced One-Shot Deals program.
In addition to the $4,000 sums meant to cover expenses like first and last month’s rent for lessees, it was reported that $1,000 gift cards were also being made available to procure household necessities and cover moving expenses.
“This is a very small pilot only available to asylum-seeking families in select emergency shelters operated by DHS. This is not a citywide effort and not available to migrant families residing across the shelter system,” the spokesperson stipulated while making clear that the agency was using existing money allocated to the DHS and that the city had not provided funds specifically for the program.
It was also said that an alien could not return to the shelter to reapply for another $4,000 handout after the initial giveaway.
Friday, New York City Councilmen Kalman Yeger (D) and Joe Borelli (R) appeared on Fox News’s “Special Report” where the former lamented how “people believe that they can come here, they’re going to get a room at the Roosevelt Hotel, they’re going to get a phone, and they all seem to have motorcycles and they seem to be doing just fine.”
In expressing how out of control the spending has grown to support the border crisis across the five boroughs alone, Yeger explained how during budget talks three months prior with the onus of $5 billion toward the crisis the “biggest fight on the table was whether or not we can keep our libraries open, that’s the battle, whether or not we can afford to keep our cops on the streets, to hire more cops for retiring cops, because they’re leaving the job, to hire firefighters, to hire teachers. The services that are required by the migrants who are coming to New York City are immense. They’re costing us an enormous amount of money. We just simply do not have the resources to keep on footing this bill.”

Yeger explained, “Well, anybody who says that every single person who comes over the border, lawfully or unlawfully, is here to commit crimes is simply wrong. But, at the same time, it’s naive and false to say nobody who comes here is committing crimes. And the reality is, when a city like New York, with the numbers at approximately, as of two months ago, over 205,000 migrants have come to New York City in the last two years, that is — it’s simply not believable to say that our crime numbers are not seeing the result of that policy.”
To his point, it was recently reported that up to 75% of arrests in Midtown Manhattan alone were accredited to the growing population of migrants living at the expense of the taxpayers as a result of the inane sanctuary city policies being upheld.
