Mike Johnson announces a new annual award for Trump

Republicans in Congress announced a new annual award, and its first recipient is the leader of the Republican Party.

“Tonight, we have created a new award. We are going to do something we’ve never done before,” House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) announced on Wednesday at the National Republican Congressional Committee fundraiser in Washington, D.C., before welcoming President Donald Trump to the stage.

“The president has done so much for the American people, and we want to honor him in some small way, some token of appreciation for his leadership,” Johnson said.

“We’re going to honor him with a new award that we’ll present annually from this point forward,” Johnson continued.

“But he is the suitable and fitting recipient of the first-ever America First Award. We could think of no better title for what that is. That’s this beautiful golden statue here. Appropriate for the new golden era in America,” the speaker said.

The president delivered an hour-long speech, blasting Democrats and touting his administration’s accomplishments.

“We will make America strong again,” Trump concluded his speech, rallying the GOP.

“We will make America proud again. We will make America safe again, and most importantly, we will make America great again,” he said. “Thank you very much, Republicans, go out and win the midterms!”

While Johnson’s remarks and the new award presented to Trump elicited predictable howls from the left, some social media reactions seemed mixed.
