Mike Pence hits Trump over ‘reckless words’ on Jan 6, says history will hold him ‘accountable’

Former Vice President Mike Pence reportedly tore into former President Donald Trump during a speech delivered Saturday night at the Gridiron Club’s annual dinner in Washington, D.C.

According to CNN, the speech began lighthearted enough, with the former VP making jokes about Trump, current President Joe Biden, current Vice President Kamala Harris, and others.

“I will wholeheartedly unreservedly support the Republican nominee for president in 2024 … if it is me,” he quipped at one point.

But Pence then suddenly made a grand switch, telling the audience that the Jan. 6th riot was “one thing I haven’t joked about.”

“President Trump was wrong. I had no right to overturn the election. And his reckless words endangered my family and everyone at the Capitol that day, and I know history will hold Donald Trump accountable,” he continued.

He also attacked those who have downplayed the Jan. 6th riot as just a tourist visit.

“Tourists don’t injure 140 police officers by sightseeing. Tourists don’t break down doors to get to the Speaker of the House or voice threats against public officials,” he said.

“Make no mistake about it: What happened that day was a disgrace, and it mocks decency to portray it in any other way,” he added.

Pence also said the American people have the right to know what all took place during the riot.

“The American people have a right to know what took place at the Capitol on January 6th, and I expect members of the fourth estate to continue to do their job,”  he said.

There was just one problem …

“The comments come after attorneys for Pence filed a motion last week asking a judge to block a federal grand jury subpoena for his testimony related to January 6th. Pence had publicly signaled that he planned to resist the subpoena, arguing it was ‘unconstitutional and unprecedented,'” according to CNN.

This discrepancy prompted criticism and calls of hypocrisy:

Besides trashing Trump, the former VP also lavished praise on the media.

“Pence repeatedly praised the media’s coverage of the January 6th attack at the dinner, which traditionally includes members of the Washington press corps among its attendees, and said he was able to carry out his role in certifying the election ‘in part’ because of the media’s real-time coverage of the insurrection,” CNN notes.

“We were able to stay at our post, in part, because you stayed at your post. The American people know what happened that day because you never stopped reporting,” he said.

“For what you do to preserve and strengthen this great democracy, you have my heartfelt thanks and I know the thanks of a grateful nation. Thanks for what you do to preserve freedom,” he added.

But in reality, the media have been one of the key forces, along with Democrats, who’ve stymied every legitimate attempt to procure the full truth about what happened during the Jan. 6th riot.

Indeed, instead of digging into everything and asking questions, the media have blindly accepted every single talking point fed to them by the partisan Jan. 6th committee.

And then when Fox News host Tucker Carlson recently released new, never-before-seen footage from the riot debunking some of the left’s narratives about it, the media pounced, attacking him with as much fury as Democrats.

Plus, the media have happily adopted the left’s “insurrection” narrative and refuse to admit the truth that what happened was just a riot.

Conversely, recall how the media refused to admit that the Black Lives Matter riots were riots versus so-called “peaceful protests.”
