President Donald Trump’s administration has reportedly been approached about building a baseball stadium in a Wyoming national park.
According to The Washington Post, Major League Baseball (MLB) approached the president about constructing a stadium in Grand Teton National Park for a Field of Dreams-style game. The outlet reports that a source inside MLB wants to explore the possibility of establishing a regular stadium in the park, but the White House indicates that the issue is not a priority for the administration and would not be a presidential directive.
“Two people familiar with the plans said that National Park Service Deputy Director Frank Lands has visited the park to scout locations for a baseball stadium. He did not comment on the visit when asked by the Post,” The Daily Mail reported. “Luther Propst, a county commissioner in Wyoming, said he met Lands at the park for his visit, but did not discuss the potential construction of a baseball stadium.”
He disagrees with the idea, however, saying it would be “a radical departure from the tradition of national parks.”
National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA) regional director Betsy Buffington also expressed her displeasure.
“It is irreplaceable. There is no other Grand Teton that is home to bears and wolves and bison, elk and pronghorn,” she explained to The Post. “So the idea that we would put a baseball stadium in Grand Teton National Park is just – what would the word be? – ludicrous. Crazy. Ridiculous. I mean, I just can’t fathom.”
The NPCA has been at odds with the Trump administration before, accusing it of moving at “a breakneck pace to dismantle our nation’s conservation legacy within our national parks and on public lands just beyond park boundaries.”
