Murder charges dropped for Chicago mom and teen son who she ‘ordered’ to kill attacker, now she’s suing the city

Evidence clearing a Chicago mother and her 14-year-old son of murder raised questions about the other dropped charge as she herself took legal action against the city for “intentional affliction of emotional distress.”

On June 18 around 11 pm, 35-year-old Carlishia Hood was witnessed having a dispute with 32-year-old Jeremy Brown at Maxwell Street Express takeout restaurant in Chicago, Illinois. Though details as to the cause of the argument were not revealed, video from the scene showed Brown growing increasingly enraged with Hood, yelling “Get your food!” as he balled up his fist and threatened her.

“Oh my God, if you say one more thing, I’m going to knock you out,” he said before he could be seen swinging punches at Hood’s head, backing her into the corner moments before her son entered the eatery and fatally shot Brown in the back.

At the time of the incident, Hood was accused of telling her son to shoot and kill Brown as well as the victim’s girlfriend, and CBS Chicago reported that she had texted her son during the argument prompting him to come to her aid. However, the widely circulated video of the incident led Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx to drop both murder charges that had been issued to the Hoods, as well as the charge against the mother of “contributing to the delinquency of a minor.”

Hood had been held on $3 million bail until Monday when the charges were dropped and Foxx’s office released a statement that read, “Based upon our continued review and in light of emerging evidence, today the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office (CCSAO) has moved to dismiss the charges against Carlishia Hood and her 14-year-old son.”

“Based upon the facts, evidence, and the law, we are unable to meet our burden of proof in the prosecution of these cases,” the statement concluded. Hood possessed a valid Firearm Owners Identification (FOID) as well as a concealed carry permit, neither of which explained her 14-year-old having possession of the firearm at the time of the incident.

Having been fully exonerated, Hood turned her sights against the city of Chicago and the arresting officers. At a press conference Tuesday morning, her attorney Brandon Brown explained the first of an undisclosed number of lawsuits to come that assert his client had been the victim of “malicious prosecution, false arrest and intentional affliction of emotional distress.”

Ari Williams, another attorney for the family noted, “Ms. Hood is and has always been a victim.”

Included among the outpouring of support for Hood was rapper Meek Mill who heaped praise on the lax on crime, George Soros-backed State’s Attorney Foxx for seemingly doing the right thing for a change. “KIM FOXX … Thankyou for the role you play at the right times!”
