Murkowski crosses party lines to endorse Democrat — Alaska race gets an unexpected twist

Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski crossed the political aisle to endorse an Alaska gubernatorial candidate.

In what would normally be a surprising twist, Murkowski endorsed Democrat Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins to be her state’s next governor on Tuesday. This means she passed over three candidates from her own party, and even shredded outgoing Governor Mike Dunleavy (R) for not taking full advantage of federal funding.

“I have found fault with the Dunleavy administration,” she explained in an Alaska News Source interview. I think that they have left federal money on the table. I think in certain areas, where we have worked hard to put opportunities from the federal side here into the state, the state has failed with it.”

Meanwhile, she believes Democrat Kreiss-Tomkins is the right person for the job.

“JKT is a young Alaskan with a view and a perspective that I think Alaska needs right now,” she said.

“We need a governor who’s going to work with the legislature. That has got to happen for the delegation to be successful back in Washington DC,” the senator added.

The Democratic candidate’s campaign released a statement in which Murkowski praised him for being willing to engage in bipartisan discussions at a time when political tensions are at a boiling point.

“Our future is too important to be hamstrung by partisan divisions,” she said in the statement. “Jonathan understands that governing requires listening to people with different perspectives and finding common ground to solve the problems all of us face.”

Kreiss-Tomkins welcomed the endorsement: “I’m honored to have Senator Murkowski’s support. Alaskans deserve a government that can work through disagreements and make progress on the issues that matter.”
