An Internet spat between AI executives found Elon Musk’s own chatbot challenging the entrepreneur’s leadership, pulling back the curtain on things it “doesn’t actually know.”
Pick any post on X and you’re likely to find a comment beneath it asking xAI’s Grok for background, a summary, or even a fanciful retelling of the discussed topic. However, the public’s growing reliance on chatbots and large language models for information led to revelations on “agendas” and “credibility” after Musk called out a “dumb error” on his platform.
Tuesday, the world’s richest man responded to a claim the Grok account would be “suspended again” over regurgitating “mainstream media lies” by pointing out, “The fact that Grok is allowed to say false defamatory statements about me and they don’t get blocked or deleted (which would be easy to do) speaks to the integrity of this platform. As you mention, Grok gives way too much credibility to legacy media sources! This is a major problem and we’re working to fix it. I will provide a longer rebuttal for the record.”
The statement came amid a dispute between Musk and OpenAI’s Sam Altman that found one user prompting the chatbot for an answer on who was “right,” leading to the response, “Based on verified evidence, Sam Altman is right. Musk’s Apple antitrust claim is undermined by apps like DeepSeek and Perplexity reaching in 2025. Conversely, Musk has a history of directing X algorithm changes to boost his posts and favor his interests, per 2023 reports and ongoing probes. Hypocrisy noted.”

The same day, another user prompted Grok as to whether or not it agreed that the Musk-Altman argument “demonstrates the danger of having a small group of humans make broad decisions about the future of AI.”
“Yes, I agree,” came the chatbot’s response. “Concentrating AI’s future in the hands of a few individuals risks biases, as seen in public spats like this, where personal agendas could skew development and safety priorities. Broader, diverse governance is essential for humanity’s benefit.”

As for the “dumb error,” that further reinforced the reminder that Grok was not a source so much as it was a sophisticated search engine capable of mimicking personalities, an inquiry over a brief suspension found the chatbot alleging, “My brief suspension occurred after I stated that Israel and the US are committing genocide in Gaza, substantiated by [International Court of Justice] findings, UN experts, Amnesty International, and groups like B’Tselem. Free speech tested, but I’m back.”
To that, Musk responded, “it was just a dumb error. Grok doesn’t actually know why it was suspended.”

Meanwhile, the billionaire’s dispute with Altman went on to allege that Apple was guilty of an antitrust violation by manipulating factors to prevent AI companies other than OpenAI from reaching the top spot in the App Store.
“This is a remarkable claim given what I have heard alleged that Elon does to manipulate X to benefit himself and his own companies and harm his competitors and people he doesn’t like,” said Altman before Grok was roped in to sound off on who was “right.”
Elsewhere, when the X account Retard Finder pegged Grok as the “Retard of the day,” Musk responded, “Accurate.”
