Billionaire Elon Musk’s early nod to a preferred candidate in the 2024 presidential race may not be set in stone after a recent entry led him to comment “Great statement…”
One thing made clear by the “Twitter Files” was the extent that Big Tech, corporate media and departments within the federal government went to in order to keep certain stories out of the public eye leading into the 2020 presidential election; the Hunter Biden laptop story in particular.
Now, as the field of 2024 GOP hopefuls has further fleshed out, Musk has shown just how influential the platform may prove to be in the presidential cycle by reacting to a video from the just filed South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott.
“Great statement by @votetimscott!” the tech mogul wrote in response to a 30-second campaign ad leading the congressman to reply, “This is our mission…we’ll save you a seat on Monday!”

During the campaign spot preceding an official announcement scheduled for Monday in North Charleston, South Carolina, Scott could be heard telling an audience of people, “Today’s kids are growing up immersed in a culture where everyone’s a victim.”
“We have to start teaching the necessity of individual responsibility,” he continued “If you are able-bodied, you work. If you take out a loan, you pay it back. If you commit a violent crime, you go to jail.”
“Can I get an amen?” the senator asked to applause from those gathered.
At the time of this posting, the initial tweet from Musk had attained more than 12.5 million views and was closing in on 100,000 likes. By comparison, Scott’s quote tweet within the same hour had amassed only 1.2 million views and 7,000 likes.
Compared to his official congressional account, @SenatorTimScott which boasted over 700,000 followers, the @votetimescott account touted less than 70,000 and neither held a candle to Musk’s 140 million followers.
The contrast in numbers showed both how influential the social media platform could be as the unbridled town square it was intended to be and the impact figures like Musk could personally have on shining a spotlight where corporate media may otherwise look away.
Furthermore, the billionaire’s post suggested that his view of the presidential race may not be as locked up as previous comments had implied. In March, Musk had suggested ahead of former President Donald Trump’s indictment that if he were arrested and placed in handcuffs, “Trump will be re-elected in a landslide victory.”

The indictment did not escalate to that point as Trump presented himself in New York City to be arraigned on April 4 before returning to his Florida home that evening to address the American people.
Additionally, in November 2022, Musk followed up a June remark about leaning toward Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis as his pick for president in 2024 by answering the question “Would you support Ron DeSantis in 2024, Elon?” with a simple, “Yes.”

That comment had followed his admission that “I was a significant supporter of the Obama-Biden presidency and (reluctantly) voted for Biden over Trump.”
While it remains to be seen who Musk may ultimately throw his favor toward, Friday’s post proved he may have a significantly greater impact than even the $22 million cash on hand Scott had reported from funding his Senate reelection.
