NBC host grills Dem on his reasons for seeking the presidency: ‘You are literally running against President Biden’

Minnesota Rep. Dean Phillips, a Democrat, formally launched a presidential campaign against President Joe Biden on Friday — and leftists are raging mad, including, it would appear, the leftists in the media.

During an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press Now” on Friday, host Kristen Welker essentially harangued him over his decision to run against Biden.

“As some of President Biden’s supporters have pointed out, you have voted with President Biden nearly 100% of the time. So, I guess the question is, do you have any major policy critiques about the Biden administration?” she asked.

In other words, she demanded to know why he was running against Biden if he supports Biden. In fairness to Phillips’ critics, he offered a very weak response.

Listen:

“Well, Kristen, I admire the president. I voted for those policies because they’re good ones and they will be making a difference over time. I’m not running against Joe Biden. I’m not running against President Biden. I’m running for the future. Yes, we have some policy differences, but I’m a proud Democrat,” he said.

Welker was confused.

“Congressman, respectfully, you are literally running against President Biden. So can you tell voters what is your major point of difference with President Biden?” she said.

But Phillips kept playing the semantics game, this time arguing that he was “running for the majority of Americans who want somebody different.”

“But you just announced you’re running for president, aren’t you? That means you’re running against President Biden. That’s literally the definition of what that means,” Welker replied, pushing back on his bizarre claim.

Only after several minutes of this back-and-forth exchange did Phillips admit the real reason he’s running against President Biden.

“Right now, if this election was held today, President Biden would lose, and it is an existential threat to the future of the United States of America. That will not happen under my watch,” he said.

Listen:

The answer did not please Biden’s many Democrat supporters, some of whom rushed to X to attack Phillips for daring to challenge the current presidency’s veritable supremacy.

To his credit, Phillips did later criticize Biden some more while officially launching his campaign in New Hampshire later Friday afternoon.

“Right now, having been to the southern border twice, it is not secure. It is inhumane. It is not fair to those who are seeking refuge,” he said, according to The Hill.

“It is not fair to our border patrol agents who have shown extraordinary mercy and humanity in ways that I wish more Americans saw. And they’ve been demeaned by Democrats,” he added.

That said, his “solution” to the border crisis was awfully similar to the “solution” being pursued by the Biden administration — which is to send aid to foreign countries in the hopes of tackling the so-called root causes of migration.

“It’s wasted. It fuels corruption in a lot of places. Why do we not invest in the very countries from which migrants are coming because they’re persecuted, feel unsafe, or have no opportunity,” he said.

“Why don’t we use American resources upstream to invest in those countries, so people have a safe place, they have opportunity, they have shelter and do not need to pour across our border,” he added.
