Nearly 100,000 tell Mamdani: Stay away from 9/11 ceremony

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani will be ignoring critics who think he should not attend the September 11 remembrance ceremony.

The mayor will be attending the event on Friday, despite many Republicans and even family members of victims arguing that he should stay far away. As of this writing, a Change.org petition on the matter boasts 100,975 verified signatures, showing just how serious people are about excluding him from the day. Even former spokesman for first lady Jill Biden, Michael LaRosa, signed onto the petition, arguing that Mamdani’s presence would be so controversial that it would draw attention away from the day’s intended purpose.

“I spent my career in Democratic politics helping elected officials find the spotlight. That’s why I signed this Change.org petition. The 25th anniversary of 9/11 is one morning that must stay free of politics. Mayor Mamdani’s presence at Ground Zero will be a lightning rod that diverts attention away from the only people that morning belongs to: the victims of this heinous attack and their loved ones. The Mayor and the organizers should do the right thing, keep the focus on the families, and keep the politics out,” he wrote.

Despite the pushback, Mamdani announced his intention to appear at the solemn event while speaking ahead of the New York Carnival Parade on Monday.

“I’m proud to be the mayor of this city. I love this city. I love this country. And what I want this week to be a focus on is on the families whose loved ones were stolen from them 25 years ago in the horrific act of terror of September 11th, and a focus also on the first responders who gave everything they could to this city and to the people who came together to try and help their fellow New Yorkers,” he said.
