A new poll from the Southern Poverty Law Center, a reliably left-wing organization, finds that nearly half of Americans believe that the United States is headed in the direction of a civil war.
The numbers, when broken down by political party, indicate that over half of Republicans (53%) and over a third of Democrats (39%) agree with the statement that the country “seems headed toward a civil war in the near future.”
Other concerning data from the poll indicate that one-in-five people believe that the assassination of a president may be necessary if said president was “harming the country or our democracy.” This figure comprised of 44% of young Democratic men and 40% of young Republican women. Shockingly, those in the 50+ years old crowd largely couldn’t stand by calls for the assassination of a leader.
Ultimately, the poll revealed deep political divisions and a great deal of hostility for the opposing political party.
“A majority of both Republicans and Democrats believe their political opponents pose a threat to the country and want to harm their political opponents,” the SPLC noted. “That kind of animosity could fuel partisan violence.”
The poll also tackled a number of issues, such as growing diversity, “The Great Replacement Theory” and transgender rights. Unsurprisingly, SPLC focused largely on the responses from the right-wing respondents, in what could look like an attempt to attack or smear Republican ideals.
For example:
We also asked respondents whether they believed that “gender ideology has corrupted American culture.” The term “gender ideology” is widespread on the right, and generally refers to a belief that LGBTQ people are a threat to children and families and that men and women should adhere to “traditional” notions of masculinity and femininity. The term is used regularly on Fox News and by hard-right figures like Donald Trump, who recently said at a rally, “With their extremist sex and gender ideology, the Democrat Party is waging war on reality, war on science, war on children, war on women.” Overall, 49% of people said they believe gender ideology has corrupted American culture, including 34% of Democrats, 72% of Republicans, and 45% of Independents.
Social media reacted to the news:
Why have Civil War II?
We are never getting the two sides back together, we are too far gone.
Split up the land and let’s move on.Besides, I really want to see what they do without being able to steal $$$ from the conservatives.
