Since acclaimed director Rob Reiner and Michele Singer were found murdered in their own home, their 32-year-old son has been arrested as the alleged perpetrator. Now facing the potential of life in prison or the death penalty if convicted, a delayed arraignment came amid reports of his calm behavior at a gas station after his parents’ deaths and his bizarre actions the night before as he was seen “storming off” after questioning actor Bill Hader.
According to a report from the Wall Street Journal, Reiner was said to have asked guests at O’Brien’s party Saturday, “What’s your name? What’s your last name? Are you famous?”
Among those on the receiving end, Hader was said to have told Reiner the conversation with the man’s father was private, leading to the 32-year-old with a history of drug issues reportedly standing there staring until he was seen “storming off,” NBC News reported.
That behavior, along with a previously reported argument at the party, was said to have led to his being asked to leave, the Journal detailed.
Meanwhile, in the aftermath of the murders, video obtained by the New York Post was said to depict Reiner “calmly strolling” by a gas station near his parents’ home not long after, while other footage shared by ABC7NY showed him in a gas station purchasing a drink.

Now facing two counts of first-degree murder, wherein a conviction could mean up to life in prison without the possibility of parole or even the death penalty, Reiner’s arraignment remained delayed on Tuesday as he was placed on suicide watch and had yet to be medically cleared, the Daily Mail reported.
The outlet also provided details on the victims, indicating that the couple may have been asleep in their bed when they were murdered.
As for their discovery, the New York Times reported that the alleged suspect’s sister, Romy Reiner, found her father’s body after a massage therapist contacted her, unable to access the building for a scheduled appointment on Sunday.
Fleeing the sight of her father’s body, she only learned later that her mother was also a murder victim. Meanwhile, after arranging for 911 to be contacted, her first call was said to have been to actor and longtime family friend Billy Crystal and his wife Janice, according to TMZ.
In a statement accompanying a press release on Reiner’s charges, Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman said, “Prosecuting cases involving family violence are some of the most challenging and heart-wrenching we face because of the intimate and often brutal nature of the crimes.”
“Rob Reiner was one of the greatest filmmakers of his generation. His murder and his wife of more than 35 years, Michele Singer Reiner’s murder, are shocking and tragic,” he went on. “We owe it to their memory to pursue justice and accountability for the lives that were taken.”
