Nick Shirley, the 23-year-old “MAGA journalist” — according to CNN — who exposed the massive Somali fraud scandal in Minnesota, floated a theory on why Democrat Kamala Harris tapped Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate in 2024.
“You know what’s interesting about Tim Walz?” Shirley asked during an appearance on the Full Send Podcast. “Why do you think Kamala Harris chose Tim Walz? Nobody knew who he was before.”
“The first day he’s chosen, he raises the most amount of money than any other candidate in history. I think it’s over $35 million he raised for the campaign within just a day of being selected to become the vice president. And now we know all this fraud’s happening,” Shirley said. “How did Tim Walz, who used to be a high school football coach — he’s not even from Minnesota, he’s from Nebraska — how is he able to raise the most amount of money?”
When asked if he thinks the Somalis played a role in the fundraising haul, Shirley replied, “100%. It had to be some sort of fraud.”

Walz did, in fact, help raise $36 million within 24 hours after joining the presidential ticket in August 2024.
Shirley’s video drew well over 100 million views and was amplified by Elon Musk, Vice President JD Vance and FBI Director Kash Patel. Gov. Walz has since announced that he will not run for reelection amid the suspected $9 billion fraud scandal, and one of the “daycares” that Shirley visited, which had a typo in its sign, the “Quality Learing Center,” has shut down, according to Fox News.
And it now looks as if this was just the tip of the iceberg of massive, nationwide fraud with the Somali community.
Here’s a small sampling of responses to the story, as seen on X:
A high school coach from Nebraska doesn’t just magically out-raise every other candidate in history overnight. That money trail smells like fraud, and if Shirley’s right, Walz didn’t just allow it, he benefited from it. Whole thing’s rigged.

Tampon Tim needs to be in prison and his state needs to pay back all the fraud money.

Please stop reminding people that Tim Walz is from Nebraska. We deported him a long time ago. pic.twitter.com/KCjyawDqBb
