NY Post calls for Curtis Sliwa to drop out to stop Mamdani: ‘Swallow the bitter pill’

The New York Post called for Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa to drop out of Gotham’s mayoral contest so that support can be consolidated behind Andrew Cuomo in a last-ditch effort to stop “communist lunatic” Zohran Mamdani.

With only two weeks left to avert catastrophe, supporters of the disgraced former Democrat governor are pleading with the Guardian Angels founder to get out, clearing the field for voters to choose between the AOC-endorsed Ugandan born Muslim socialist and Cuomo, who while tainted, won’t be driven by a fanatical devotion to a political ideology that has brought ruin to every country where it has been allowed to take root.

“It burns to write this, but: It’s time for Curtis Sliwa to face reality, and admit that the city’s best hope to avoid the disaster of a Zohran Mamdani mayoralty is for him to drop out of the race,” the paper’s editorial board wrote on Monday.

“Sliwa is absolutely right that it’s not his fault that New York is in this corner, but fault isn’t the issue here,” the editorial board added. “The simple fact is that the Republican nominee is far back in third place in every poll, with zero chance of winning.”

Warning that if Sliwa doesn’t heed its advice, that Cuomo “loses by a Sliwa-shaped hole, then he will be blamed,” the paper made it clear that it was no fan of the ex-governor, a man who was run out of office in 2021 amid a flurry of allegations of sexually inappropriate behavior involving multiple women.

“In a dire situation, we’ve got to deal with the facts as they are, ugly as they are,” the editorial board wrote.

“But the fact remains that Mamdani is poised to win and do major, deadly damage to the lives of all New Yorkers: He must be stopped,” the Post said. “It stinks, but for the sake of the city you love so deeply, Curtis, please swallow this bitter pill.”

The Post was joined by the Big Apple’s other tabloid paper, the New York Daily News, which called for the local legend to take one for the team.

“Sliwa has had his fun, including being the wisecrack king of last week’s debate, but now he needs to do what is best for the city he loves and step aside to give New Yorkers a clear one-on-one choice between socialist Mamdani and centrist Cuomo,” the paper wrote.

Also calling for Sliwa to end his campaign was billionaire grocery mogul and local talk radio host John Castimatidis, who on Monday urged him to get out while there’s still time to prevent Mamdani’s hostile takeover.

“Curtis should pull out right now,” said Catsimatidis, who ran for mayor in 2013. “We cannot take a chance on Zohran winning.”

“People will be proud of him, that he did the right thing for New York City,” Catsimatidis added, according to CBS News.

But the calls for him to drop out don’t seem to have convinced Sliwa to do so, and if anything, seem to have made him more defiant to stay in the race.

“The billionaires can conspire to pick their candidate … I trust the people. They will make the decision. I will not drop out,” he told Fox News Digital

In a Monday night post to X, the Guardian Angels founder made it clear that he’s not going anywhere.

“We will never surrender. They’re not just trying to push me out, they’re trying to silence YOU. The people who’ve had enough. The people who feel pushed out, unsafe, and ignored for years,” he said. “For years, politicians turned their backs on you; they disparaged us, and now they come begging for your vote. We won’t be fooled.”
