NYT’s Maggie Haberman speculates how DeSantis will do in a Trump debate after Crist head-to-head

New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman is a reliable mouthpiece for the Democratic establishment, but even she couldn’t spin the outcome of Florida’s gubernatorial debate in a convincing manner to favor Charlie Crist — which is not to say that Haberman didn’t try to make lemonade out of a lemon of a candidate.

The liberal media remains fixated on instigating a brouhaha between Donald Trump and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, liking nothing more than seeing the two Republican heavyweights take each other out, and Haberman saw the debate as an opportunity to further that goal while disparaging DeSantis along the way

“The debate may not have done a ton to change the trajectory of the FLGOV race. But it did have a number of political operatives – all affiliated with someone other than Trump – wondering how DeSantis will withstand Trump in a primary debate,” the NYT reporter tweeted, in response to Crist appearing on Fox News.

The fact that the Democratic candidate was on Fox News is an indication of how desperate he is. As anchor Bill Hemmer suggested, Crist needed a knockout Monday night and fell short of striking such a blow — he trails badly in the race, with some polls having him down double digits.

Interestingly, Crist countered by referring to what he must see as his best shot at the debate, which is to speak to his opponent’s presidential aspirations — in effect, conceding that DeSantis has a much higher political trajectory than he does.

“But I think it did,” he replied. “And let me explain. I mean, what happened was I asked whether or not Governor DeSantis, if reelected, would serve a full four-year term. He was like a deer in the headlights, Bill. He wouldn’t answer the question. He couldn’t answer the question. And he wasn’t going to be honest with the people of Florida.”

DeSantis delivered one of his better lines in responding to the possibility of challenging President Joe Biden when he said, “The only worn-out, old donkey I’m looking to put out to pasture is Charlie Crist.”

Equally interesting is that Haberman, a reporter for the much-vaunted New York Times, has turned off replies to her tweets.
