President Joe Biden’s pardon of his son has put a lot of leftists in a very uncomfortable position, say the hosts of the “Pod Save America” podcast.
Jon Favreau, Jon Lovett, and Tommy Vietor, who were dubbed “Obama bros” during their time in the White House, sat down to discuss the effect of the pardon, specifically on those who have defended Biden’s integrity.
While many, including Vietor, can empathize with the pardon on a “human level,” politically the president has made his entire party look “stupid” by going back on his promise not to pardon Hunter Biden.
“Now everyone looks stupid. Everyone looks like they are full of s—. And Republicans are going to use this to argue it was politics as usual when Democrats warned of Trump’s corruption or threat to the rule or the threat to democracy,” Vietor explained. “And I think that’s the piece of this I am most frustrated with, which is Joe Biden looking like a typical, lying politician. And I think that leads to a cynical feeling that all politicians are bad. They are all the same and that this is just par for the course.”
The host added that the pardon has not just “damaged Biden’s reputation,” but had tarnished the reputation of the entire Democrat Party.
Favreau went one step further, admitting he was frustrated that Biden would choose to pardon his son, but leave “a whole bunch of other people who were just government servants doing their job” like Anthony Fauci twisting in the wind. He was also upset by the fact that he actually believed Biden’s lie about not pardoning Hunter.
“I believed him. I feel like a f—ing fool, that’s what makes me mad about it,” he said candidly.
Lovett suggested that this move will give Republicans more ammunition to go after the Biden family.
“Of course, conservatives are going to say, ‘See? Joe Biden is just protecting himself,'” he said. While all the hosts agreed that there is no evidence of the president engaging in shady business practices with his family, they also believe he should have done more to insulate himself from the appearance of impropriety.
