Kansas Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was dealt an unnecessary distraction over the weekend as he prepares for his fourth Super Bowl in just 6 years in the league.
On Saturday, the star player’s father, Patrick Mahomes Sr., was arrested in Tyler, Texas, on a charge of driving while intoxicated (DWI). The former New York Mets pitcher was arrested just eight days before Super Bowl LVIII, where his son will lead the Chiefs against the San Francisco 49ers in Las Vegas.
The arrest was at least the third DWI for Mahomes Sr., according to the New York Post. He served 40 days in jail on weekends in 2019 and 2020 after being charged for the second time in 2018. Jail records show he was released Sunday after posting a $10,000 surety bond.

As seen in the clip above, Mahomes Sr. attended last year’s Super Bowl in Glendale, Ariz., celebrating the Chiefs win over the Philadelphia Eagles on the field with a cigar — he joked at the time he was smoking “Philly blunts.”
Mahomes Sr., 53, played for the Mets in 1999 and 2000, and played in the majors for 11 seasons overall. He has been divorced from Patrick’s mother, Randi, since 2006.
Turns out, trouble is no stranger to the Mahomes family. Little brother Jackson Mahomes was arrested last year on three felony counts of aggravated sexual battery after he was accused of forcibly kissing the owner of a restaurant, which was captured on video. The charges were later dropped after prosecutors noted in a motion that the alleged victim “has made her lack of cooperation abundantly clear.”
