Pelosi backs white guy to head up DNC in another blow to DEI

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) followed in the steps of Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) in announcing her endorsement for the next leader of the Democratic National Committee.

Despite Democrats’ insistence that they are the party of diversity, the 84-year-old congresswoman tapped Wisconsin State Party Chair Ben Wikler as her pick to take the helm at the DNC.

Wikler called it the “honor of a lifetime” to get Pelosi’s backing ahead of the DNC chair election set for Feb. 1.

“It is the honor of a lifetime to receive Speaker Emerita Pelosi’s endorsement for a DNC Chair campaign that is surging at this decisive moment,” he wrote in a post on X, sharing Pelosi’s statement. “Together we will unite our party, fight through this moment of crisis, and win victories that make a difference in people’s lives.”

“For several years, I have had the honor and success to work with Ben Wikler from his thousands of events to save our health care at MoveOn to his winning tough elections in Wisconsin including Justice Janet Protasiewicz and Senator Tammy Baldwin,” Pelosi said in her statement.

“As a former State Chair and longtime DNC member, I have enormous respect for the DNC and the grassroots activism it engenders. It is with great confidence that I endorse Ben Wikler for Chair as the candidate best suited to lead us to a stronger DNC and many Democratic victories,” the California Democrat added.

Former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley, Minnesota State Party Chair Ken Martin, and Faiz Shakir, a former campaign manager for Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) are also vying for the position.

Schumer announced his support of Wikler earlier this month.

“I have said since the day after the election that Democrats should view this moment as a challenge. We must listen to the American people, learn from the results, and move forward stronger,” the New York Democrat said in a statement on X. “That’s why I am enthusiastically supporting @benwikler to be the next Chair of the DNC.”

On his campaign website, Wikler said he is running for chair of the DNC “to UNITE, FIGHT, and WIN across every state and territory in our country.”

“We need a reckoning—not recriminations—about what works and what needs to change. We win by growing our big tent and focusing on the values and the fights that bring us, and most Americans, together—and defeat the divide-and-conquer attacks of GOP oligarchs,” the site states.

“What we fight for shows voters who we are. But we don’t win if voters only get their news about Democrats from Republicans,” it continues, adding that there is “a moral obligation to win.”
