Ronald Reagan once said that if you’re explaining, you’re losing, and Nancy Pelosi has been doing a lot of explaining since the ouster of President Joe Biden as the Democratic nominee.
At the same time, it’s hard to say that the former speaker is losing — at least, not yet.
Pelosi has denied being “the leader of any pressure [campaign]” against Biden, as has been widely reported, and she offered a bizarre remark about the letter dropped on X announcing that the cognitively challenged 81-year-old president was stepping aside that is sure to stir conspiracy theorists.
In an interview last week with New York Times columnist Ezra Klein, the former speaker suggested that the letter was not from Biden personally.
“I didn’t accept the letter as anything but a letter. I mean, I mean in another, there are some people who were unhappy with the letter — let me say this, some said that some people were unhappy with the letter,” Pelosi said, gesturing as if there was more to the story below the surface. “I’ll put it in somebody else’s mouth because it was a — I don’t even know. It didn’t sound like Joe Biden to me. It really didn’t.”

So, is Pelosi suggesting the letter issued under Biden’s name was issued against his will?
Biden’s letter was suspect for a number of reasons. There was no official White House letterhead and the signature was unlike previous Biden signatures.

The timing of the letter was also problematic, according to an NBC News report.
“By the time Biden convened a call with his full complement of senior advisers at 1:45 p.m. Sunday, an official statement announcing his decision had already been written. One minute later, his X account posted that statement, telling the public that he would remain in office but cede his party’s nomination — making him the first eligible incumbent president to do that since Lyndon Johnson in 1968. Less than 30 minutes after that, he endorsed Harris, blessing her as the best choice to beat Trump in a four-month sprint to Election Day,” the network reported.
Pelosi’s name is frequently mentioned as being central to what many see as a soft coup against Biden, along with Barack Obama — Democrats honed their teeth on undermining sitting U.S. presidents during the Trump administration.
Investigative journalist Seymour Hersh cited a senior DC official to report that Obama threatened Biden with the 25th Amendment, telling his old pal that he had “Kamala’s approval.”
“I went over [reports] this week with a senior official in Washington who helped me fashion an account of a White House in complete disarray,” Hersh said. “Obama called Biden after breakfast [on July 20] and said, ‘Here’s the deal. We have Kamala’s approval to invoke the 25th Amendment.’”
