Pelosi stokes China’s fury with defiant speech in Taiwan

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi provoked anger from the Chinese by taking several unexpected potshots at them during her final day in Taiwan.

Concern is now growing that both the speaker’s trip and her antics abroad could produce disastrous outcomes for Taiwan — outcomes that the incompetent Biden administration would be thoroughly unable to stop.

This raises the question of why the Biden administration is provoking China like this. Is it for financial gain? Is it because of incompetence? No matter the reason, the outcome seems clear: Disaster.

On Wednesday, Pelosi’s final day in the embattled territory, she accused China of standing “in the way” of Taiwan’s participation in international affairs and warned the communist nation that it can’t stop people like her from visiting.

“I just hope that it’s really clear that while China has stood in the way of Taiwan participating and going to certain meetings, that they understand that they will not stand in the way of people coming to Taiwan,” she said.

Pelosi also stunningly accused Chinese President Xi Jinping of being insecure when asked about China’s response to her visit.

“[T]here are certain insecurities on the part of the president of China as to his own political situation. That [is why] he’s rattling a saber,” she said.

On Tuesday, she accused China of being an autocratic nation and warned that America remains committed to preserving democracy in Taiwan.

“Today, the world faces a choice between democracy and autocracy. America’s determination to preserve democracy here in Taiwan and around the world remains ironclad,” she said.

Following Pelosi’s visit, which ended as she flew out of Taiwan early Wednesday morning EST, Divya Gopalan, the international editor of Taiwan Plus, a Taiwanese media outlet, warned that her visit and antics may wind up being costly for Taiwan.

“It was a short trip for Pelosi, but Taiwan will have to deal with the consequences of her visit for a long time to come. … China has warned against Pelosi’s visit and said very clearly that this should not go ahead. It has announced military exercises that are almost unprecedented in the way that they will be carried out,” Gopalan said to Al Jazeera.

“And along with the military threats, China has also launched economic measures, banning hundreds of products from Taiwan, banning companies from Taiwan at a time when the island is recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic and needs that helping hand.”

And for what? Certainly NOT to “preserve democracy,” Fox News host Tucker Carlson noted late Tuesday on Fox News’s “Tucker Carlson Tonight,” arguing that the Biden administration’s official line on Taiwan is the exact opposite of what Pelosi had said.

“[T]he problem is Taiwan is not a U.S. ally. In fact, Taiwan may be the only country in the world the Biden administration believes does not have the right of self-determination. ‘We do not support Taiwan’s independence,’ said the Pentagon spokesman just the other day,” Carlson said.

“So, the one thing you can be certain of is that Nancy Pelosi did not fly all the way to Taiwan to signal that the United States is going to defend that island from a Chinese invasion. … So, what’s really going on here?”

A couple of possibilities have emerged. One is that Pelosi is in it for the money.

“On the internet, you may have noticed quite a bit of speculation, some of it generated by Chinese state media, that Pelosi went to Taiwan to check on investments that her husband Paul made using insider information. Now, he did make those investments and yes, used insider information,” Carlson said.

“That’s why he’s such a fantastic stock picker worth more than $100 million. In this case, Paul Pelosi bought semiconductor stock. Taiwan makes semiconductors. Rising tensions in the region would create more demand for semiconductors. That’s the theory.”

However, Carlson doesn’t believe this is the reason.

“There’s got to be something else going on. What is it?” he said.

Incompetence, perhaps?

“It’s possible that the Biden administration is so completely incompetent, the people who run the White House are so utterly blinded by their own arrogance and their ineptitude, that they just don’t appreciate or even understand the implications of what they are doing,” he said.

Or purposeful provocation, maybe?

“Whatever the motive here is,” Carlson continued, “the effect is absolutely predictable. As with Afghanistan and Ukraine and COVID and pick nine other disasters, when what we’re watching right now finally ends, the U.S. is likely to be weaker and China is likely to be stronger. So, what does this mean? It means the beginning of the end of American influence in Asia, influence that we paid for with blood, and that’s not an overstatement.”
