Philadelphia plans to fly CHINESE flag at city hall to celebrate CCP

The Democratic city of Philadelphia reportedly plans to proudly fly the flag of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) this week.

The city’s Office of Immigrant Affairs in particular intends to fly the flag on Sept. 30 “to celebrate the anniversary of the establishment of the CCP,” according to Fox News.

It won’t be the first time Philadelphia has flown the flag. It previously flew the flag in 2017 and 2019.

Nor will this be the first time Philadelphia has immersed itself in CCP propaganda:

Fox News reports that the Sept. 30 flying of the CCP flag is being sponsored by the Pennsylvania United Chinese Coalition.

The coalition “is part of a network of such organizations attempting to boost the CCP’s reputation and reach within the U.S. under the guise of cultural exchange.”

But according to Fox News, they are no ally to the United States and its interests abroad, including in Taiwan. In fact, their website reportedly expresses deep opposition to Taiwanese independence — the latter of which is critical for U.S. access to advanced semiconductors.

Philadelphia city officials are now facing intense local and national pressure to halt the planned pro-CCP festivities on Sept. 30.

U.S. House Select Committee on China Chairman John Moolenaar, a Republican, penned a letter to Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker, a Democrat, demanding the flag-raising ceremony be scrapped.

“Raising the national flag of a foreign adversary country sends the wrong message to our citizens and lawful residents, especially those oppressed by the CCP regime,” Moolenaar wrote. “The city government of Philadelphia should not allow itself to be exploited as a tool for CCP propaganda.”

“To cancel the PRC flag-raising ceremony will not only demonstrate that the local government in the United States stands for U.S. values and national interests, but that it stands in support of the people of China who face the regime’s ruthless oppression and transnational repression,” he added.

Philadelphia’s mayor also received a letter from the executive director of the Campaign for Uyghurs, a nonprofit founded in response to the genocide of Uyghurs in China.

“The red flag of Communist China is not a symbol of culture or unity,” Executive Director Rushan Abbas wrote. “It is the banner of a totalitarian regime that the U.S. government and numerous parliaments have determined is committing genocide.”

“Under this flag, the CCP has built an extensive system of mass surveillance, separated millions of children from their families, sterilized women, erased religion, and targeted ethnic and faith communities, including Uyghurs, Christians, Tibetans, Hong Kongers, and practitioners of Falun Gong,” she continued.

In a tweet, Abbas accused Philly officials of either being naïve or engaging in the “outright appeasement of the CCP and genocider Xi Jinping.”

“While Beijing is busy brainwashing its citizens into believing that the United States is their enemy and blaming the US for China’s economic failures, why on earth are we raising the communist flag in Philadelphia—the very city where the U.S. declared its Constitution and the principles of freedom it stands for?” she added.

Pennsylvania state Sen. Doug Mastriano has also spoken out.

“Stop being politically correct here, and say no to raising a flag over our city here that oppresses people,” he told local media.
