Police in California under fire for deadly shooting of a double amputee armed with 12-in butcher knife

Anti-cop activists wasted no time denouncing the death of a black double amputee who was shot and killed Thursday by police in California — the terrible optics coming as the nation struggles to come to terms with five black police officers in Memphis beating a black man to death.

The Huntington Park Police Department received a call about a man in a wheelchair armed with a 12-inch butcher knife stabbing another man in an unprovoked attack and when officers arrived, they encountered Anthony Lowe Jr., who was still holding the knife as seen in video taken of the encounter.

Lowe, 36, is seen jumping out of his wheelchair and trying to get away from the officers by running on the stubs of his legs. At one point, Lowe can be seen turning back toward an officer and raising the large knife. Three officers fired at least eight shots at Lowe, who died at the scene.

Police said an attempt to use a taser failed and that officers feared Lowe was going to throw the knife at them, according to reports — Huntington Park officers do not wear bodycams.

“The suspect was tased at least twice by Huntington Park Officers but the deployment of the taser was ineffective,” the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office said. “The suspect attempted to throw the butcher knife at the officers again, at which time an officer-involved shooting occurred.”

Lowe’s family told the Los Angeles Times that his legs were amputated after a prior confrontation with police, but did not offer details.

The Coalition for Community Control Over the Police and the family of Anthony Lowe Jr. held a news conference to demand justice, CBS Los Angeles reported.

The deceased man’s cousin, Ellakenyada Gorum, ignored the allegation that Lowe had just stabbed someone to suggest that he was harmless because he was in a wheelchair.

“He was loved,” she sobbed. “And it’s sad how these police are getting away with killing our African American people. Just getting away with it. He was in a wheelchair. What more could he do? What more could he do?”

“You guys knew your lives wasn’t in danger,” Gorum added. “He’s running on his limbs. How cold-hearted could they be?”

Lowe’s mother, Dorothy Lowe, also spoke: “They murdered my son, in a wheelchair with no legs. They do need to do something about it.”
