Principal abruptly stops valedictorian speech after explosive anti-ICE, anti-Israel remarks

A high school valedictorian’s graduation speech caused the principal to storm the stage when she got too political.

Clayton High School student Leen Hijaz was giving a speech to her fellow graduates when she decided to fly off-script into a leftist political rant. Deviating from preapproved remarks, she voiced support for Palestine and torched United States immigration enforcement before the school’s principal, Melissa Moore, rushed onto the stage to pull her away from the microphone. At this point, the student assumed her seat with a self-satisfied smirk.

“Before I leave the stage, I have one last thing to say. Every single person here has a voice; we have the privilege to use it when millions around the world are struggling and suffering to be heard,” she said. “Whether it’s the millions suffering in Palestine, Sudan, Congo, Afghanistan, and so many other countries around the world, or families being torn apart by ICE. These are not just an issue here; they are happening there, they’re happening right here as I speak.”

“My point is, we’re not given a voice to stay silent,” she said

But that’s not where the story ends. According to a TikTok video posted by the graduate, the school refused to give her a diploma following the remarks. However, Johnston County Public Schools said Tuesday that the diploma was ultimately “awarded.”

“During this year’s Clayton High School graduation, a student departed from her approved remarks,” they explained in a statement to the New York Post.  “School administrators intervened in order to maintain the integrity and focus of the program in real time. This action was not about limiting a student’s voice, but about ensuring that a school-sponsored event remained consistent with its intended purpose.”
