A high school valedictorian’s graduation speech caused the principal to storm the stage when she got too political.
Clayton High School student Leen Hijaz was giving a speech to her fellow graduates when she decided to fly off-script into a leftist political rant. Deviating from preapproved remarks, she voiced support for Palestine and torched United States immigration enforcement before the school’s principal, Melissa Moore, rushed onto the stage to pull her away from the microphone. At this point, the student assumed her seat with a self-satisfied smirk.
Watch:
A young valedictorian at Clayton High School in North Carolina was kicked off stage and threatened with losing her diploma, all for speaking up for oppressed people around the world.
They couldn’t even let her finish. This is insane! pic.twitter.com/FNfNzcTrDu

“Before I leave the stage, I have one last thing to say. Every single person here has a voice; we have the privilege to use it when millions around the world are struggling and suffering to be heard,” she said. “Whether it’s the millions suffering in Palestine, Sudan, Congo, Afghanistan, and so many other countries around the world, or families being torn apart by ICE. These are not just an issue here; they are happening there, they’re happening right here as I speak.”
“My point is, we’re not given a voice to stay silent,” she said
But that’s not where the story ends. According to a TikTok video posted by the graduate, the school refused to give her a diploma following the remarks. However, Johnston County Public Schools said Tuesday that the diploma was ultimately “awarded.”
“During this year’s Clayton High School graduation, a student departed from her approved remarks,” they explained in a statement to the New York Post. “School administrators intervened in order to maintain the integrity and focus of the program in real time. This action was not about limiting a student’s voice, but about ensuring that a school-sponsored event remained consistent with its intended purpose.”

Mass media turned women who would have been potentially productive busybodies in their own communities, into worthless crybabies about things they can’t possibly affect. https://t.co/j85fas6tlN

North Carolina: Leen Hijaz, Clayton High School valedictorian, hijacked her graduation speech to rant about Palestine and ICE.
Administrators quickly cut the speech short & removed her from the microphone.
Bravo Clayton High School – THIS is how you handle those who cannot… pic.twitter.com/Hwqsuie7Gs

A Clayton High School senior decided commencement was the perfect time for a political lecture on ICE and global conflicts. Yet another example of ideological activism making its way into North Carolina classrooms. The reaction from her classmates says it all. #ncpol #ncga pic.twitter.com/8zwOQFRCFS
