Rand Paul makes it official, makes criminal referral of Fauci for lying to Congress

U.S. Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., announced Saturday on Twitter that he has filed an “official criminal referral” against Dr. Anthony Fauci — with the Biden Justice Department, for what it’s worth.

Paul was responding to a Feb. 2020 email shared by RealClearPolitics White House reporter Philip Wegmann that showed Fauci commenting on a task force call with British medical researcher Jeremy Farrar, who was director of the Wellcome Trust at the time. Francis Collins, the former director of the National Institutes of Health, was also on the call, along with other “highly credible” scientists, according to Fauci.

Gain of function was discussed with Fauci saying the scientists were “concerned about the fact that upon viewing the sequences of several isolates of the nCoV, there were mutations in the virus that would be most unusual to have evolved naturally in the bats and that there was a suspicion that this mutation was intentionally inserted.”

“The suspicion was heightened by the fact that scientists in Wuhan University are known to have been working on gain-of-function experiments to determine the molecular mechanisms associated with bat viruses adapting to human infection, and the outbreak originated in Wuhan,” Fauci added, according to a screenshot of the newly unredacted email.

“This directly contradicts everything he said in committee hearing to me, denying absolutely that they funded any gain of function, and it’s absolutely a lie. That’s why I sent an official criminal referral to the DOJ,” Paul tweeted on Saturday.

The problem with Paul’s announcement is that he is talking about the highly politicized DOJ being led by Attorney General Merrick Garland, an agency that critics say employs a two-tiered system of justice based on political affiliation — look no further than the treatment of Hunter Biden.

Social media users certainly believe Fauci has criminal liability when it comes to the pandemic, but are highly skeptical that “justice” is on the horizon.

Here’s a quick sampling of responses to the story, as seen on Twitter, now known as X:
