Rep. Luna says House GOP leadership trying to shut down SAVE ACT

Florida Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R) tore into the latest “bunch of BS bills” after accusing her own leadership of giving the Senate an out to avoid addressing election integrity.

Heading into the weekend, Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R) led all but five Republicans in approving a funding package 71-29 meant to avert most of the federal government from shutting down. Seeing the latest spending fight as a prime opportunity to force a vote on the Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act worth shutting down the government over, Luna alleged House GOP leadership aimed to “change how legislation is passed” to instead safeguard the Senate from going on the record.

Taking to X Friday afternoon, the member of the House Oversight Committee asserted, “House GOP leadership is trying to shut down the SAVE ACT / SAVE AMERICA ACT being attached to a rule that would FORCE the Senate to vote to secure our elections.”

“To be clear, they are trying to change how legislation is passed because they know that this legislation, ‘as is,’ would fail. So they are then going to open it up to all Democrats. They need 2/3 of a supermajority of the House to pass it,” continued Luna. “I am a hard no and will never vote for this.”

“I am not voting for any of these appropriations unless the SAVE Act is included. The SAVE Act / SAVE AMERICA ACT will fail in the Senate if it not attached to an appropriations bill or if THUNE does not remove the filibuster. They know this. Members of Congress know this,” added the congresswoman. “STOP BEING WEAKLINGS! EITHER YOU INCLUDE VOTER ID ON THE RULE GOING TO THE SENATE OR I AM A NO ON RULES.”

Politico’s Meredith Lee Hill had reported that House Speaker Mike Johnson intended to hold a vote on the funding package approved by the Senate at 6:30 p.m. on Monday and that “they would pass it however they could.”

The comment suggested that the House GOP leadership was “trending toward a suspension vote which would require two-thirds majority and a lot of Dem help. Rules Committee hasn’t canceled their Sunday meeting yet, but it seems to be trending that way with hardliner demands. Johnson on the call said Trump supports this deal and they need to pass it. GOP leaders pressed members to get into DC Sunday night.”

Setting the bill up under suspension would impede Luna and a coalition of House Republicans from using a rule vote to force the issue on inclusion of the SAVE Act in the funding package.

Earlier on Friday, Luna had suggested, “If the House is serious about actually delivering election integrity, then they need to actually include one of these bills in the appropriations package coming back to the House. Otherwise, it’s lying to the American people and pushing a messaging bill that will die in the Senate.”

Further cementing her disgust with the political gamesmanship that appeared set to protect RINOs from a new opportunity to show their true colors, the Florida lawmaker went on to slam, “‘We will fight on the next bill’ is WEAK. I am not down with messaging bills. It’s a waste of time. Remind me where it says in the Constitution, ‘Congress must pass a bunch of BS bills that won’t go anywhere so they can get on TV and get reelected.'”
