U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace tore into United States Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle, calling out her vague responses as lies before Congress.
“The American people are watching and they’re wondering if there are any questions you can answer honestly today,” the South Carolina Republican began her questioning of Cheatle during her appearance before the House Oversight and Accountability Committee.
Mace joined other lawmakers in voicing their frustrations with Cheatle repeatedly dodging questions about what transpired during the July 13 assassination attempt of former President Donald Trump during a Pennsylvania rally.
Mace informed the director that she was going to ask “very specific questions” and wanted “very specific answers” in response, adding that, “Most of my questions are going to demand a yes or no answer.”

“My first question… both sides of the aisle today have asked for your resignation. Would you like to use my five minutes to draft your resignation letter?” Mace asked, prompting a “no” from Cheatle.
The congresswoman continued to grill the director with questions on whether the security lapses in protecting the former president were “a colossal failure” and whether the tragedy was “preventable.”
“Has the Secret Service been transparent with this committee?” Mace asked. “Would you say the fact that we had to issue a subpoena to get you to show up today as being transparent?”
“We had to issue a subpoena to get you to show up today,” the lawmaker said as Cheatle maintained the agency’s transparency and cooperation.
In questioning Cheatle’s stance that the Secret Service is not political, Mace demanded to know why the director’s prepared remarks were leaked to select media outlets hours before they were presented to the House committee.
“Would you say leaking your opening statement… several hours before you sent it to this committee as being political? Yes or no?” Mace asked
“I have no idea how my statement got out,” Cheatle replied, prompting Mace to fire back, “Well, that’s bulls–t.”
“You say you’re fully cooperating with this committee?” Mace continued her questions.
“Have you provided all audio and video recordings in your possession to this committee, as we asked on July 15 – yes or no?” Mace asked.
“I would have to get back to you,” Cheatle replied.
“That is a no. You’re full of sh-t today,” Mace fired back. “You’re just being completely dishonest.”
At that moment, Rep. Kweisi Mfume (D-MD) was heard saying, “We have to maintain decorum in this committee, no matter how upset we get.”

Mace admonished the Secret Service director who had already frustrated several lawmakers who had questioned her on both sides of the aisle.
“These are important questions that the American people want answers to, and you’re just dodging, and talking around it in generalities,” Mace said, “and we had to subpoena you to be here and you won’t even answer the questions.”
“These are not hard questions,” she continued. “Have you provided any of this information that this committee has asked of the Secret Service? Any of it?”
“I’ll have to get back to you,” Cheatles responded.
“Have you even read this letter that we sent? Did you even read this?” the congresswoman asked.
“The answer is no, we haven’t gotten a single document or piece of information or data from you or your agency in relation to the rally that we have asked you for,” she continued, going on to ask the director if the attempted assassination of Trump was a “failure of training or execution or both?”
“How many Secret Service personnel have lost their jobs due to this colossal failure at this time?” Mace asked.
“None,” Cheatle, who has refused to resign, replied.
