A married reporter with leftist New York magazine has been accused of having an affair with presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
Word of the alleged affair between reporter Olivia Nuzzi and RFK broke Thursday via Nuzzi’s employer, New York magazine.
“Recently our Washington Correspondent Olivia Nuzzi acknowledged to the magazine’s editors that she had engaged in a personal relationship with a former subject relevant to the 2024 campaign while she was reporting on the campaign, a violation of the magazine’s standards around conflicts of interest and disclosures,” a magazine spokesperson told Status.
“Had the magazine been aware of this relationship, she would not have continued to cover the presidential campaign. An internal review of her published work has found no inaccuracies nor evidence of bias. She is currently on leave from the magazine, and the magazine is conducting a more thorough third-party review. We regret this violation of our readers’ trust,” they added.
Speaking directly with Status, Nuzzi fessed up to some of it, saying that “earlier this year, the nature of some communication” between herself “and a former reporting subject turned personal.”
“During that time, I did not directly report on the subject nor use them as a source,” she added. “The relationship was never physical but should have been disclosed to prevent the appearance of a conflict. I deeply regret not doing so immediately and apologize to those I’ve disappointed, especially my colleagues at New York.”
It’s not clear what type of “relationship” the two had if it wasn’t physical, but some suspect this means they were just good friends:
Did you actually read the articles? It’s click bait and a smear campaign. They never had a physical relationship. She became friends with RFK Jr. A friendship with a political candidate is a conflict of interest for a political journalist, so she was put on leave.

The New York Post has claimed via its sources that the two’s “relationship” involved texting.
RFK has for his part denied the legitimacy of these allegations.
“Mr. Kennedy only met Olivia Nuzzi once in his life for an interview she requested, which yielded a hit piece,” a campaign spokesperson told Status.
RFK has been married to actress Cheryl Hines since 2014. Nuzzi meanwhile WAS engaged to fellow reporter Ryan Lizza of Politico since 2022, but the two reportedly called their marriage off sometime in the last few weeks.
All this comes nearly 10 years after Nuzzi posted the following odd tweet:
Why does Hollywood think female reporters sleep with their sources? http://t.co/l74hijW4W5

The tweet has since gone viral and triggered a flurry of responses.

Prior to his marriage to Hines, RFK was married to philanthropist Mary Richardson Kennedy, but she committed suicide in 2012 amid a then-ongoing divorce battle.
Years later in 2017, Mary’s former divorce lawyer blamed her suicide partly on RFK.
“Mary was a fabulous mother and, like all of us, a flawed adult whose problems stemmed from her husband’s conduct and her drinking, caused by specific stimuli, with Bobby—who could anger, frustrate, belittle her into taking a drink—as provocateur,” he told The Daily Beast.
In 2013, the Post ran a bombshell story after receiving a copy of what they termed “RFK’s sex diary.”
“The thick, red journal was found in their home by his wife, Mary Richardson Kennedy, who, distraught over their impending divorce and Kennedy’s serial philandering, committed suicide last year,” the Post reported at the time.
“A copy of the 398 pages, reviewed by The Post, details RFK Jr.’s daily activities, speeches, political activism, and the lives of his six children in the year 2001. But they also record the names of women — with numbers from 1 to 10 next to each entry. The codes corresponded to sexual acts, with 10 meaning intercourse, Mary told a confidant.”
