Roseanne opens up about regrettable tweet and betrayal by co-star Sara Gilbert: ‘She stabbed me in the back!’

Legendary comedian and actress Roseanne Barr revealed this week to conservative commentator Megyn Kelly that fellow actress Sara Gilbert had backstabbed her.

Recall that Barr was effectively cancelled in 2018 after she posted an allegedly “racist” tweet about former Obama administration official Valerie Jarrett. The tweet led to her sitcom, “Roseanne,” being cancelled, and Barr being excised from Hollywood.

Appearing on Kelly’s podcast this Thursday, she said Gilbert backstabbed her at the time by posting the following tweet:

Indeed, according to her, it’s this very tweet that set off the chain of events that led to her cancellation.

“It was her tweet that cancelled the show,” she told Kelly, adding that Gilbert “repeatedly twisted [the knife].”

She was “floored” by the tweet especially because Gilbert had “begged” her to return to TV for a “Roseanne” reboot. The original “Roseanne” aired in the 1990s.

“She begged me to come back, saying, ‘I’ve got your back this time, I won’t let anyone at you, I won’t let anyone hurt you, I’m gonna protect you. I know you have mental health problems, but I’m going to be there, I’m gonna stand in the way.’ This is all the crap she told me,” she said.

Yet three months into the reboot, the show was suddenly cancelled, and all of the cast — sans Barr — was transferred to a brand new show, “The Connors.”

“All the crap she told me and then she tweeted, ‘It’s sad when one cast member’  … something about racist blah, blah, and I was floored. I was just floored,” she said.

According to the comedian, at the time Gilbert was also trash-talking her on “The Talk,” a CBS talk show, and so she’d called her to tell her to shut up.

“It wasn’t enough that she stabbed me in the back, and did what she did to me there, but then she would go on her talk show every day and talk about how shocked she was at my racism on top of it,” Barr said.

“It was every day, and I had done that show when she needed a guest. I called her up and I said, ‘You better shut your blanking mouth about me. I’m telling you, you better shut your effing mouth.’ And then she did, but, you know, my voice can be very scary,” she added.

The new show, “The Connors,” was pretty much exactly the same thing as “Roseanne,” except it didn’t feature the original show’s star character. In the first episode of “The Connors,” the narrator reportedly explained that Barr’s character, Roseanne, had died. Barr didn’t care for this.

“They just tried to kill me, and I felt like they killed my character and my character. I thought they were sending a message over the airwaves because they knew I had mental health issues. I thought they wanted me to kill myself, and all my friends did too. They said they’re trying to push you to suicide,” she told Kelly.

Gilbert is now facing growing backlash on social media because of Barr’s stunning revelations.

This isn’t the first time Barr has slammed Gilbert.

“She [Gilbert] destroyed the show and my life with that tweet. She will never get enough until she consumes my liver with a fine Chianti,” she told The Washington Post in 2019, adding that she couldn’t forgive the fellow actress.

Gilbert for her part claimed at the time that she still “loved” Barr.

“While I’m extremely disappointed and heartbroken over the dissolution of the original show, she will always be family, and I will always love Roseanne,” she told the Post.
