Neocon Sen. Lindsey Graham indicated on Sunday that he’s ready to declare war on Iran if Hezbollah attacks Israel.
Appearing on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” the hawkish senator was asked about his recent spate of pro-war rhetoric.
“You said this week that the only way to keep the war from escalating is to hold Iran accountable, and that it might mean bombing their oil refineries. Have you had any discussions with the Biden administration about this?” host Kristen Welker asked him.
“A bit. I want to applaud President Biden for his strong statement in support of Israel. I just got off the phone with the Israelis. Their goal is to destroy Hamas in the south and try to save as many innocent Palestinians as possible, two, prevent escalation north from Hezbollah,” Graham replied.
He then proceeded to threaten Iran on live national television.
“Here’s my message: If Hezbollah, which is a proxy of Iran, launches a massive attack on Israel, I will consider that a threat to the state of Israel existential in nature. I’ll introduce a resolution in the United States Senate to allow military action by the United States in conjunction with Israel to knock Iran out of the oil business,” he said.
“Iran, if you escalate this war, we’re coming for you!” he added.
Listen:
Welker responded by noting that he was using “very strong language” and by asking him whether he was “poised to declare war on Iran?”
In response, Graham threatened Iran once more.
“I’m poised to use military force to destroy the source of funding for Hamas and Hezbollah. The idea that Iran read about this operation in the paper or on television is laughable. Ninety-three percent of Hezbollah and Hamas’ money comes from Iran. They’re the source of the problem. They’re the great evil,” he said.
“So if Hezbollah escalates against Israel, it will be because Iran told them too. Then Iran, you’re in the crosshairs of the United States and Israel!” he added.
His latest remarks parallel his previous rhetoric, all of which has been extremely hawkish as it pertains to the ongoing conflict in Israel.
“What I would do is I would bomb Iran’s oil infrastructure. The money financing terrorism comes from Iran. It’s time for this terrorist state to pay a price for financing and supporting all this chaos,” he told CNN’s Abby Phillip last week.
When she asked him if he “would want the United States and Israel to bomb Iran even in the absence of direct evidence of their involvement in this attack,” he said yes.
“If there’s an escalation, Abby, if there’s people’s throats being cut on television as Israel goes into Gaza, they’re threatening to kill the hostages, if Hezbollah is unleashed on Israel in the north, it will be because Iran is supporting that. If you don’t get the connection between Iran and this terrorist activity by Hamas and Hezbollah, you’re missing a lot,” he said.
His remarks were predicated by a report from The Wall Street Journal claiming via “senior members of Hamas and Hezbollah” that Iran had helped plan Hamas’ terror attack on Israel.
“Officers of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps had worked with Hamas since August to devise the air, land and sea incursions—the most significant breach of Israel’s borders since the 1973 Yom Kippur War—those people said,” the Journal reported.
“Details of the operation were refined during several meetings in Beirut attended by IRGC officers and representatives of four Iran-backed militant groups, including Hamas, which holds power in Gaza, and Hezbollah, a Shiite militant group and political faction in Lebanon, they said.”
Members of the Biden administration have for their part claimed they’ve seen no evidence to substantiate the Journal’s reporting.
“U.S. and Israeli officials said they have no firm evidence so far that Iran authorized or directly coordinated the attack that killed more than 900 Israelis and wounded thousands,” according to The Washington Post.
However, even the current and former intelligence officials the paper spoke to said last week’s terror attack by Hamas “bore hallmarks of Iranian support.”
This is relevant not only because of the potential for war, but also because the Biden administration just unfroze $6 billion in Iranian assets only weeks before the attack. The administration has desperately been trying to claim the money had nothing to do with the terror attack, but critics frankly don’t believe them in light of all the counterevidence.
Counterevidence like Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi’s own words. Last month he explicitly said the rogue regime will spend the $6 billion in assets “wherever we need it.”
“This money belongs to the Iranian people, the Iranian government, so the Islamic Republic of Iran will decide what to do with this money,” he added, making it clear that the Biden administration’s claim that the money “can only be spent on things like food and medicine” is nonsense.
