Democrats rose to the defense of the Biden administration’s border failures, shielding the Homeland Security secretary ahead of a potential impeachment.
Tuesday, as the crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border continued unabated, on the eve of the House Committee on Homeland Security holding a hearing considering the impeachment of DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, Republican senators endeavored to hold a vote of “no confidence” regarding his capabilities to “faithfully carry out the duties of his office.”
“The Biden Administration has, for all practical purposes, erased our border and embraced a structure of complete lawlessness letting our national security hang in the balance,” said Kansas Sen. Roger Marshall (R) from the Senate floor as he was joined by Tennessee Sen. Marsha Blackburn, Florida Sen. Rick Scott and other Republicans.
Their 13-page resolution cited the nearly 10 million known illegal alien entries across the southern border, tens of thousands of pounds of fentanyl smuggled into the United States, and, among other points, how “on multiple occasions while serving as Secretary…Mayorkas, in violation of his constitutional oath, has willfully provided perjurious, or false and misleading testimony to Congress…”
The resolution specifically pointed to Mayorkas’ claims to have “operation control” of the border and that it is secure.
However, the attempt to adopt the measure without a formal vote was stymied by the objection of outgoing Delaware Sen. Tom Carper (D) who criticized the GOP’s actions against “family man” Mayorkas, “someone who deserves our thanks, not the back of our hand,” as he found fault in South America violence and corruption instead of the failing of the federal government to enforce the law and defend America’s national sovereignty.
Slated for Wednesday’s House hearing dubbed “Havoc in the Heartland: How Secretary Mayorkas’ Failed Leadership Has Impacted the States,” members of the lower chamber were expected to consider the resolution to impeach the DHS secretary.
Previewing that hearing, Florida Rep. Kat Cammack (R) had joined Fox News host Harris Faulkner Monday raising the points presented by her Senate colleagues and alleging that, during a closed-door meeting with Congress where he was reminded of the impending impeachment, “he said, ‘You are not going to like who comes next.'”
“I asked him if that was a threat, and he smiled,” asserted the congresswoman. “This man is dangerous. He knows exactly what he is doing, and he is two-faced. We need to get rid of him. I hope now.”

Marshall highlighted remarks from his fellow Republican senators, including Indiana Sen. Mike Braun who pointed out 170 from the “terrorist watchlist have been confronted — how many others were not?” and Missouri Sen. Eric Schmitt who said, “What gets lost in the numbers however, is that Mayorkas hasn’t just presided over the worst crisis at our southern border in history, he is directly responsible for it.”
Additionally, while Utah Sen. Mike Lee reminded the border numbers represented “just the ones we saw that we are aware of,” Blackburn charged, Mayorkas “is a Secretary of Homeland Security who clearly does not believe in securing the homeland because the border policy for the Biden Administration, which he is implementing, is FOR an open border.”

The Kansas senator went on to tell the Washington Examiner, “For his role in peddling Joe Biden’s deliberate destruction of America’s borders, DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas must be impeached and removed from his office. The threat that is presence within our federal government poses to America’s national security and the safety of her people is too great for Congress to stand idly by.”
