Former South Carolina Rep. Trey Gowdy got a blistering smackdown after calling out Rep. Nancy Mace and other Republicans on the government funding bill.
Gowdy, a Fox News contributor, unloaded on former House colleagues amid the drama over avoiding a government shutdown, telling host Bret Baier that Republicans “never should have gotten rid of Kevin [McCarthy]” while also slamming Mace for how she voted against the stopgap funding bill.
“It’s not Mike Johnson’s fault. I mean, he’s got a dysfunctional family. Mike Johnson is not dysfunctional, but several of his family members happen to be,” Gowdy said on “Special Report.”

“They never should have gotten rid of Kevin, Bret. I mean, this all goes back to what was your plan when you got rid of McCarthy? They said they were going to cut spending. They said they were going to do this,” the former congressman continued.
“The guy that instigated it, he’s out there singing Happy Birthday to 17-year-olds on Cameo. So, I mean, what was their plan when they got rid of Kevin McCarthy?” Gowdy said.
“So no, it’s not Mike Johnson’s fault. Thirty-something people— Nancy Mace would not be in the House if it weren’t for Donald Trump, and she can’t vote the way that he asked her to today? I hope he’s got as long a memory for House members as he does Senators that even threaten to not support one of his nominees,” Gowdy added. “That’s what I hope. His memory is good.”
Mace returned fire with a shot at Gowdy’s past record, referring to when he chaired the House committee investigating the 2012 Benghazi terror attack that left four Americans dead. Hillary Clinton, who was serving as Secretary of State under President Barack Obama at the time, never faced any repercussions.
“You let Hillary Clinton off the hook for Benghazi. Sit your ass back down,” the South Carolina Republican posted on X, prompting former Rep. Matt Gaetz to react, “True!”

In a follow-up comment, she referred to the former lawmaker as the “very worst never Trumper.”

Mace, who was one of 38 Republicans voting against the Trump-backed funding bill on Thursday, told Fox News host Jesse Watters, “The CR tonight spent the same exact amount of money today as it did in the one yesterday.”
“I don’t want to continue Joe Biden levels of spending months into Trump’s presidency,” she added.
Washington’s dirty little secret they don’t want you to know. This last minute CR trick is unfair to Donald Trump and unfair to the American people.
Congress has a lot of work to do to fix Joe Biden’s mess. https://t.co/7ivexlz2tI

Gowdy was roasted last month by the Federalist’s Molly Hemmingway who delivered an epic response defending Matt Gaetz as President-elect Trump’s Attorney General nominee after Gowdy called the move “dumbfounding” and maligned Gaetz as “corrupt.”
Gowdy’s rant on Fox News Thursday earned him more criticism on X where Mace kept up her attacks.
