‘Slap in the face’ banner draped over 9-11 memorial was a promo for new Islamic section of cemetery

A double-dose of injustice for 9/11 families was felt from coast to coast after Ramadan was capped off with a sign on a memorial like a “punch to the gut.”

In addition to celebrations throughout 2026 in honor of America’s 250th birthday, somber reflection is anticipated for September when the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attack will be marked. With considerable attention turned toward the growing presence of Islamists in the United States, uproar called for a swift response after an Islamic family overstepped their permission and used an installation representing the World Trade Center to promote their Garden of Peace Islamic Cemetery.

According to NBC Bay Area, the owner of Memory Gardens Cemetery in Concord, California, sold a portion of the cemetery to the family and gave them permission to put up signage. That permission was then taken to place their banner that quoted the Quran, “Every soul will taste death.”

The sign was met with quick backlash in the San Francisco Bay Area as Danny Kimmel, whose mother is buried at the cemetery, told NBC, “I felt a punch to the gut type of thing. To see that sign on that memorial is kind of like, not good in my thoughts.”

Kimmel, whose brother was killed in Vietnam, added that if his mother could know about the banner, “She wouldn’t just roll over [in her grave], she’d get up and walk.”

Adding her own thoughts on the banner, which was ordered pulled down as soon as the owner was aware of it, Kimmel’s sister-in-law, Violet, told NBC, “There’s room for everybody, but just have a little respect where you’re gonna put your things.”

The latest insult to the memory of the 2,977 people and counting killed on September 11, 2001, came amid a series of slaps to the face in New York City under the first Muslim mayor of Gotham, Zohran Mamdani (D).

In particular, the FDNY’s denial of “intended disrespect” left many wanting after an iftar (breaking of the Ramadan fast) was hosted by the FDNY Islamic Society, wherein dozens of prayer rugs were laid out in front of a plaque honoring fallen firefighters, of which 343 were killed in the performance of their duty on 9/11.

Mamdani, who continues to face criticism for aligning himself with Hamas sympathizers, including his own wife, Rama Duwaji, was reported by Susan Edelman as in attendance at the iftar.

NYC Councilmember Joann Ariola (R) relayed to Edelman that more than 20 complaints had come her way from 9/11 first responders and their families, including one current firefighter who said, “As someone who respects the sacrifices made by all FDNY members, I believe the Muslim group involved, along with city leadership (including the Mayor), showed a real lack of sensitivity … We owe it to the fallen and their families to treat that space with the utmost respect and inclusivity that truly honors everyone who served.”

In her own statement, Ariola expressed, “This is a building full of conference rooms and meeting spaces, and they had the entire auditorium for their event. Why, of all places, did they choose a hallway directly in front of a 9/11 memorial?”

Attempts at answering the question were in ample supply, and akin to reactions to the sign in California, as social media users asserted, “It’s done on purpose. It’s meant to be an insult …”
