White House press secretary Jen Psaki took great exception to the suggestion that the Biden administration is not “reaching out” to Republicans to solve the illegal immigration crisis in America.
The exchange with Fox News White House correspondent Jacqui Heinrich took place earlier this week, before the official spokesperson for President Joe Biden announced Wednesday from the press briefing podium that illegal immigrants “are free to travel” in the United States after being processed by Border Patrol.
“On Title 42, you said over the weekend that the administration agrees more needs to be done; the immigration system is broken. This was in response to a question about Democrats who don’t want to lift it right now. You invited Republicans to work with the White House to get something done on immigration, but has the White House actually reached out to any Republicans to try to move this forward recently?” Heinrich asked.
“It has been a longstanding open invitation. Any Republican who wants to work with us on immigration reform, you’re invited; let’s have a conversation. We have not seen an expression of that interest across the board,” Psaki responded.
In effect, Psaki extended the invitation in response to being asked if the White House had done so.
“So you’re wanting Republicans to go to you. The White House is not reaching out, then, to any Republicans?” the reporter asked, trying to clarify Psaki’s remarks.
“We have conversations with Democrats and Republicans all the time,” Psaki replied. “But I think it’s clear what we’re seeing from Republicans is an effort to politicize this and not fix what we all recognize is an outdated and broken system.”
Aside from the belief many Americans hold, which is that the system is “broken” in large part because Democrats refuse to enforce immigration laws on the books, opting instead to exploit them for political gain, Sen. John Cornyn, R-Iowa, responded to that notion by giving Psaki 4 Pinocchios:
Four Pinocchios:
JEN PSAKI on Title 42 and the immigration debate: “We agree that the immigration system is broken, it should be addressed. We should do more to fix it.
