Stanford University guide of ‘harmful language’ includes calling US citizens ‘American’

American colleges and universities have been at the tip of the spear when it comes to the cultural revolution to remake the nation into a place more compatible with the left’s degenerate values, with institutions of higher learning leading the way when it comes to scrubbing the English language to better indoctrinate the younger generation, and the latest example comes from California’s prestigious Stanford University.

In the finest traditions of George Orwell’s “newspeak” the commissars in Palo Alto have put out a guide to “harmful language” to be scrubbed from the university’s websites and computer code, a part of an ambitious “multi-phase, multi-year project to address harmful language in IT at Stanford,” a list that could potentially serve as a model for other schools nationwide.

Unveiled in May, The Elimination of Harmful Language Initiative is “geared toward helping individuals recognize and address potentially harmful language they may be using. It focuses on terms used in the United States, starting with a list of everyday language and terminology that can be searched for and addressed at the individual level.”

With a stated goal “to eliminate many forms of harmful language, including racist, violent, and biased (e.g., disability bias, ethnic bias , ethnic slurs, gender bias, implicit bias, sexual bias) language in Stanford websites and code,” the university’s thought police’s guideline on words and descriptions that are taboo is broken down into 10 different categories in its index.

Categories include, “ableist, ageism, colonialism, culturally appropriative, gender-based, imprecise language, institutionalized racism, person-first, violent and additional considerations.”

Included on the list of forbidden terms is “American,” with it being suggested to substitute “US Citizen” because “This term often refers to people from the United States only, thereby insinuating that the US is the most important country in the Americas (which is actually made up of 42 countries).”

Other objective terms in the section include “abort” which should be replaced with “cancel” or “end,” due to religious and moral concerns, “Karen” which should be replaced by “demanding or entitled White woman” along with “thug” which it states “although the term refers to a violent person or criminal, it often takes on a racist connotation when used in certain circles,” the words suspect or criminal are preferred.

Under the section on institutionalized racism, terms to be avoided include “black hat,” “black mark,” “black sheep,” “blackballed,” “blacklisted” and “blackbox” due to “negative connotations to the color black.”

Also discouraged is the use of the term “grandfathered” which should be substituted with “legacy status,” citing the term’s “roots in the ‘grandfather clause’ adopted by Southern states to deny voting rights to Blacks.”

The index’s gender-based section prescribes that “pronouns” should be used in place of “‘preferred’ pronouns” as “preferred” suggests “non-binary gender identity is a choice and a preference.” Also advised against are the words “freshman,” “fireman” and “congresswoman” because the “gender binary language” does not include everyone.

In the ableist section of the index, it is recommended that “accessible parking” be used instead of “handicap parking,” “died by suicide” replaced with “committed suicide” and the use of “anonymous review” instead of “blind review.”

Additionally, the term “unenlightened” should be used in place of “tone deaf,” and an “addict” be referred to as a “person with a substance abuse disorder.”

Stanford students are also no longer allowed to “master” their subjects because “historically, masters enslaved people, didn’t consider them human and didn’t allow them to express free will, so this term should generally be avoided.”
