Stefanik calls on Hochul to get with the program, move to secure northern border

A group of New York Republicans led by Rep. Elise Stefanik is urging New York Gov. Kathy Hochul to get with the program.

On Friday, the group — consisting of Stefanik, Nick Langworthy, Nicole Maliotakis, Brandon Williams, Claudia Tenney, Nick LaLota, Marc Molinaro, Michael V. Lawler, and Anthony D’esposito — sent a letter to Hochul imploring her to take action as it concerns the border.

Specifically, they requested that she do her part to secure the northern border and that she also lend her support to Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, who’s currently in a border skirmish with President Joe Biden.

“Given the influx of illegal immigrants to New York, we call on you to take efforts to secure the Northern Border, and support Texas Governor Greg Abbott in his efforts to do the same for our Southern Border,” they wrote.

“With Joe Biden and Alejandro Mayorkas refusing to act, it is past time for our Governors to take decisive action to protect their citizens and our country,” the nine Republicans continued.

As to why she should take action, the Republicans pointed to her own words. Just days earlier, the governor had penned a letter to Biden complaining about the border situation.

In the letter, she openly described the situation as a “crisis” and warned that “[s]tates and cities cannot indefinitely respond to the subsequent strain on state and local resources” caused by so many illegal alien migrants streaming across the open border.

And yet, the nine Republicans wrote, Hochul has been quiet in the face of the controversy that’s erupted in Texas.

“As someone who has described the invasion at our Southern Border as a ‘crisis’ … we were shocked when we did not see you join 25 of your
fellow governors in supporting Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s efforts to secure the U.S. Southern Border,” they wrote.

“Instead, your recent budget proposal increased funding to support illegal immigrants while cutting funding for schools across the state,” the Republicans added.

As previously reported, Texas has installed razor wire along the border to stymie the flow of illegal alien migrants. The problem is the Biden administration wants to cut down the razor wire. This has led to a standoff pitting the administration against 25 states, including Texas.

Stefanik and the other Republicans continued their letter by laying out exactly how President Biden’s border policies are destroying the country.

“Joe Biden and his failed Far Left policies have shattered the constitutional covenant between the federal government and the states,” they wrote. “He has turned every state into a border state and every community into a border community.”

“There have been over 8 million illegal crossings since Joe Biden took office, with 242,418 illegals encountered in November of 2023 alone. The Southern Border has seen 312 encounters with people on the terrorist watch list, while encounters along the Swanton and Buffalo Sector of the Northern Border saw an astonishing 91,640 illegal encounters last year,” they added.

They further noted that just recently — last month, to be precise — “an Iranian national with links to terrorism [and an arrest warrant for assault] attempted to illegally enter into New York via the port of entry in Niagara Falls.”

This is true.

“The fugitive attempted to enter the United States on Oct. 10 by presenting himself to U.S. immigration authorities at the Rainbow Bridge Pedestrian Walkway in Niagara Falls,” according to a statement from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. “Customs and Border Protection officers refused him entry into the United States and returned him to the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) the same day.”

“Two days later, on Oct. 12, U.S. Border Patrol arrested him as he unlawfully entered the United States from Canada on or around the Whirlpool Bridge Port of Entry in Niagara Falls without being admitted or paroled by a designated immigration official,” the statement continues.

The Republicans also aimed fire at Hochul for not doing her own job.

“As an all-time high number of illegal immigrants cross our borders and bleed into New York, your refusal to reverse course has created an unsustainable environment that has taken a financial and humanitarian toll on the state,” they wrote.

“New York students have been kicked out of their schools and forced into remote learning while migrants occupy their classrooms, Army veterans are being evicted from their homes to make room for illegal immigrants, a sprawling tent city has materialized, and earlier this week, a 3-month-old girl was found dead in a migrant shelter,” they added.
