A month after a 19-year-old New Mexico woman was charged with the murder of her newborn son, startling footage captured the moment hospital staff discovered the heinous scene.
On Jan. 27, Alexee Trevizo’s ongoing denial to her mother about having had sex led the young woman to Artesia General Hospital where she complained of back pain. A pregnancy had proven otherwise. However, her attorney claimed to Law & Crime that that information had not been given to his client prior to her locking herself in a restroom where she delivered the child without assistance.
Nearly two hours of unedited footage from the hallway of the New Mexico hospital showed how after Trevizo had rushed to the bathroom, her mother spoke to her from outside the door before a nurse attempted to open it after waiting roughly twenty minutes. Only then did the young woman open the door revealing that she had been cleaning a large amount of blood from the floor, the New York Post detailed.
Not long after, a custodian was dispatched to the restroom to contend with the mess only to discover that a newborn boy had been placed inside the trash with a fresh liner placed over him to conceal his presence.
Still shots from the surveillance video captured as hospital employees attempted to console the cleaning woman, clearly stricken by her discovery.
The police were contacted and when they interviewed Trevizo at the hospital she could be heard on the bodycam footage stating, “I’m sorry. It came out of me and I didn’t know what to do.”
“I was scared, it was not crying or nothing,” she continued as she attempted to convince law enforcement and doctors that her son was a stillborn birth.
By March, the New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator had determined that was not the case, the baby had died by homicide and Trevizo was charged with “first-degree murder, or alternatively abusing a child resulting death, and tampering with evidence” according to the Post.
“Lexee, have you watched the news about what the girls do to their babies and they go to jail?” the mother could be heard yelling at her daughter in front of the police.
Speaking with Law & Crime, Trevizo’s attorney Gary Mitchell remained in defense of the client having argued there were “major discrepancies about what happened” and “this isn’t a classic child abuse case.”
He told the outlet, “I’m absolutely convinced that not only will we be able to show that she’s totally innocent, but we’ll be able to show what some people might call malpractice that took place.”
“This is a situation in which the hospital failed her,” Mitchell argued. “The nurses and doctors failed her. The medical investigators failed her.”
“They gave her major medication. Some of that medication is certainly dangerous to an unborn child or fetus. That medications was started without finding out whether or not she was pregnant,” the attorney contended. And as for her not knowing she was pregnant, he blamed a failure on birth control that would have given her no reason to suspect anything other than that “she had been protected…Obviously it didn’t work.”
Trevizo’s case was shockingly similar to that of 21-year-old Lucia Garcia who had given birth in a restroom at Staten Island University Hospital in New York City after insisting she didn’t know she was pregnant and throwing her newborn child into the trashcan.
