Reports of a prosecutorial shakeup in the investigation of a former CIA director suggested the federal government remains rife with political obstructionists.
In November 2025, it was reported that a federal grand jury out of the Southern District of Florida had issued dozens of subpoenas related to the Russian collusion hoax, including to the likes of former FBI officials Peter Strzok and Lisa Page.
Also included was former CIA Director John Brennan, who seemingly took a loss this week when the lead prosecutor in his case was replaced, prompting many to suggest she’d been stonewalling the investigation.
According to a report from CNN, U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida National Security Section Chief Maria Medetis Long was removed from the probe of Brennan, who’s accused of lying in a 2023 congressional deposition regarding the infamous Steele Dossier.
CNN reported that she “resisted pressure to quickly bring charges against the former CIA director and prominent critic of President Donald Trump, according to people briefed on the matter.”
The office of U.S. Attorney Jason Reding Quiñones said in a statement, “It is completely healthy and normal to change members of legal teams.”
“As a matter of routine practice, attorneys are moved around on cases so offices can most effectively allocate resources,” the statement continued as a source told CBS News that the removal of Medetis Long followed her allegedly telling Quiñones that she believed “there was not enough to make a case.”
Further framing the shakeup as President Donald Trump’s administration aiming to pursue Brennan by any means necessary rather than endeavoring to remove an alleged bad actor from the DOJ, Bloomberg Law reported on the replacement for Medetis Long and described Christoper James DeLorenz as, “A former top aide to Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche,” and a former “law clerk for US District Judge Aileen Cannon in Florida when she presided over the prosecution of Trump during the Biden administration for his handling of classified information.”
As had been reported, the investigation of Brennan had prompted a referral for criminal prosecution from House Judiciary Committee Chairman Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), who’d said in an October 2025 letter to then-Attorney General Pam Bondi, “Brennan falsely denied that the CIA relied on the discredited Steele dossier in drafting the post-election Intelligence Community Assessment.”
“On January 6, 2017, the CIA, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and National Security Agency published a declassified version of an Intelligence Community Assessment (ICA) titled Assessing Russian Activities and Intentions in Recent US Elections,” wrote Jordan. “The ICA stated, among other things, that Russia ‘developed a clear preference’ for President Trump and ‘aspired to help’ him win the election. This conclusion, now known to be false, was based in part on the Steele dossier, which ‘was referenced in the ICA main body text, and further detailed in a two-page ICA annex.”
“The newly declassified evidence also confirms that Brennan falsely testified to the Committee. During a transcribed interview on May 11, 2023, Brennan stated that ‘the CIA was not involved at all with the [Steele] dossier,” the congressman detailed.
Given the apparent impact that one career official could have on the Justice Department, reactions on social media argued, “Shows they don’t need a deep bench, one well placed person can stop a train.”
