Support behind Jim Jordan for speaker grows, and Liz Cheney’s NOT happy about it

House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan is back in the running for House Speaker and some in his party are not too happy.

In particular, former Rep. Liz Cheney took to social media to smear Jordan and any other Republicans who choose to support the Ohio lawmaker in his effort to take up the gavel after Rep. Kevin McCarthy was voted out as speaker last week.

Both Jordan and his GOP colleague Majority Leader Steve Scalise of Louisiana announced their run for the speakership on the heels of McCarthy’s ouster. But after failing to drum up enough support even though he was chosen as the GOP nominee, Scalise stepped down and removed his name from the running on Thursday.

“I just shared with my colleagues that I’m withdrawing my name as candidate for the speaker designee,” he told reporters after a closed-door meeting Thursday night.

“Our conference still has to come together and is not there. There are still some people that have their own agendas,” Scalise said. “This House of Representatives needs a speaker, and we need to open up the House again. But clearly, not everybody is there. And there’re still schisms that have to get resolved.”

On Friday, Jordan announced he was re-entering the race for speaker.

“Jordan, a Donald Trump loyalist who has burnished a reputation on the Hill as a conservative bomb-thrower, could still meet the same fate as Scalise. Because of the party’s razor-thin majority, just five GOP detractors can block Jordan in a House floor vote, and a handful of moderate Republicans have already said they won’t cast their vote for Jordan,” NBC News reported. “They include Reps. Ann Wagner of Missouri, Austin Scott of Georgia, and Don Bacon of Nebraska.”

The very idea triggered Cheney who took to social media to voice her disgust.

“Jim Jordan was involved in Trump’s conspiracy to steal the election and seize power; he urged that Pence refuse to count lawful electoral votes. If Rs nominate Jordan to be Speaker, they will be abandoning the Constitution. They’ll lose the House majority and they’ll deserve to,” Cheney wrote.
