The president’s effort to root out corruption and get the economy back on track was met with a Biden-era roadblock as the terminated Federal Reserve governor lawyered up.
Following a criminal referral from the Federal Housing Finance Agency alleging mortgage fraud, President Donald Trump informed Federal Reserve Gov. Lisa Cook that, effective immediately, she was removed from her position “for cause.” Taking counsel from Hunter Biden’s attorney, the ousted economist issued a statement of defiance that contended the chief executive “has no authority” to remove her.
“President Trump purported to fire me ‘for cause’ when no cause exists under the law, and he has no authority to do so,” read the statement from Cook, who was appointed to a 14-year term by then-President Joe Biden in 2022. “I will not resign. I will continue to carry out my duties to help the American economy as I have been doing since 2022.”
Having previously served on then-President Barack Obama’s White House Council of Economic Advisers and on Biden’s transition team, Cook’s connections were on display as her attorney, Abbe Lowell, also issued a statement that asserted, “President Trump has taken to social media to once again ‘fire by tweet’ and once again his reflex to bully is flawed and his demands lack any proper process, basis or legal authority. We will take whatever actions are needed to prevent his attempted illegal action.”

In announcing the termination of Cook, the president pointed to allegations of mortgage fraud brought by FHFA Director Bill Pulte, who made a criminal referral to the Justice Department after the economist had reportedly claimed primary residence in two separate states.
“In light of your deceitful and potentially criminal conduct in a financial matter, they cannot [have full confidence] and I do not have such confidence in your integrity,” said Trump. “As a minimum, the conduct at issue exhibits the sort of gross negligence in financial transactions that calls into question your competence and trustworthiness as a financial regulator.”
Meanwhile, corporate media talking heads rallied behind Cook, including attorney Norm Eisen, who, during an appearance on MSNBC’s “The Weeknight” on Monday, brought the president’s felony convictions into the conversation as he engaged in performative politics akin to then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-CA) stunt at Trump’s 2020 State of the Union address.

Co-host Michael Steele set the stage as he said to Eisen, “… Alexander Hamilton, Mr. President, you may recall him … very bright lines were drawn with respect to the banking relationship between the Reserve … and the government.”
While contending that the Supreme Court has ruled against the president terminating members of the Federal Reserve Board, the attorney glossed over the administrative stay issued by Chief Justice John Roberts that prevented the reinstatement of dismissed Democrat members of the National Labor Relations Board and the Merit Systems Protection Board.
“But Donald Trump doesn’t care about the Constitution! He doesn’t care that Congress has said you can only fire somebody for cause! He doesn’t care that he has no cause here!” insisted Eisen before requesting Steele hand him the copy of Trump’s dismissal letter. “Do you know what Lisa Cook should do? What Nancy Pelosi did. She should tear that letter … that letter is worthless!”
