Terrifying video captures moment carnival ride plummets 50 feet, injuring multiple people

The terrifying moment a carnival ride failed while 50 feet in the air was captured on video and certainly left many viewers with the impression that there were fatalities.

Fortunately, there were no deaths at the fair in northern India, although multiple people, including at least five children, were injured when a high-rise attraction plummeted to the ground, the Hindustan Times reported.

The incident took place Sunday evening in the city of Mohali. The spinning ride is seen slowly ascending a tower and when it reaches the top it suddenly drops. Described by the Times as a “drop tower,” the decent initially looked like many carnival rides — except that there was no last-minute reprieve.

Instead, the carousel crashed into the ground with a massive thud, and riders are seen being tossed into the air like ragdolls. People on the ground scream in horror over what had just occurred.

There were no ambulances on the fair grounds and attendees helped load the injured riders into police vans, where they were taken to a nearby hospital, local outlet NDTV reported.

An eyewitness told the Hindustan Times that fairground bouncers threatened those who tried to help and fair organizers “fled the scene.”

“We picked up the injured and rushed to the hospital. There was no ambulance, and even the bouncers of the [fair] were trying to threaten us,” the person said. “Later, the employees of the organizers also fled the scene.”

Named the “London Bridge,” the news channel said the attraction was supposed to close on Aug. 31 but was recently extended until Sept. 11.

The cause of the malfunction has not been identified. Local authorities have launched an investigation, saying they will “hold an inquiry and strict action will be taken against the guilty.”

“We will find out how this happened. It seems there was a technical issue,” fair organizer Sunny Singh said, according to the Times. “Earlier too, we organized several [fairs] but this has never happened. We will cooperate with the police and administration.”
