Texas college mocked over ‘Afrochemistry’ class with no final exam

In another example of the prioritizing of left-wing activism over education in the nation’s institutions of higher learning, Rice University was ridiculed over a course that takes DEI idiocy to entirely new levels.

The course which is called “Afrochemistry: The Study of Black-Life Matter,” claims to address “inequities in chemistry and chemical education” and doesn’t conclude with a final exam,

“Students will apply chemical tools and analysis to understand Black life in the U.S. and students will implement African American sensibilities to analyze chemistry. Diverse historical and contemporary scientists, intellectuals, and chemical discoveries will inform personal reflections and proposals for addressing inequities in chemistry and chemical education,” the Houston, TX private research university describes the class which is on the Spring 2024 course schedule.

“This course will be accessible to students from a variety of backgrounds including STEM and non-STEM disciplines,” the description continued. “No prior knowledge of chemistry or African American studies is required for engagement in this course,” the description adds.

“Afrochemistry” has no final exam according to the course description on Rice’s website.

The college’s offering has been getting attention on social media at a time when the corrosive effects of  “woke” leftism on campuses has been seen with the explosion of anti-white racism and overt anti-Semitism at elite Harvard University.

An image said to be of a flyer promoting the class has been posted to X, formerly Twitter, with the head of a student with an afro-style hairdo and word balloons showing thoughts about what “Afrochemistry” could be about.

The thoughts included “what does it look like to do science on ones own terms?”, “What does justice look like in chemistry?” and “How does our society shape the science we do?”

Among those commenting on the “wild” class was author John LeFevre who in a post to X, wrote, “DEI is coming for the hard sciences at Rice University.”

The course is being taught by Dr. Brooke Johnson, a Rice alum and former university track athlete who holds a Ph.D. in chemistry from Princeton University. According to her bio on the school’s website, she “is passionate about the intersection of science and social justice.”

Dr. Johnson is a part of the university’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion department.
