Texas mom kills 4-year-old daughter, takes own life after losing custody battle

Tragedy in Texas left a four-year-old girl dead in a murder-suicide after a custody fight led one parent to permanently deny the other access to their child.

Nearly two years after their divorce and mere hours after a court battle left Aaron Savella with custody of four-year-old Vivian, 35-year-old Cibelle Savella went to a horrific extreme to override the outcome. Tuesday, before a handoff could be completed, the Brazilian-born woman shot her young daughter before nearly botching her own suicide.

“There was a custody hearing earlier today that didn’t go well for the mother,” expressed Houston Police Lt. Larry Crowson. “She came home, shot her four-year-old, and then shot herself.”

Commenting with details from an ABC 13 report, Matt Von Swol wrote on X, “Court documents say she was ‘awarded possession of the child only when continuously supervised.’ Vivian was supposed to be handed over to her dad that night. She never made it.”

Additionally, the Daily Mail reported on court documents that stipulated the mother was barred from speaking Portuguese to the girl unless the Guardians of Hope supervisor monitoring the visit knew the language. Evidently, the court did not account for the unsupervised access the mother had before necessary safeguards could be established.

At the time of the incident, the girl’s stepfather and babysitter were said to have been downstairs at the couple’s townhome. Upon hearing the gunshots, he reportedly rushed to the room and attempted to save the little girl’s life.

Meanwhile, the mother’s attempt to kill herself with a gunshot to the face was said to have initially failed, as early reports suggested she was expected to recover from the injury. Savella was ultimately declared deceased at the hospital.

A statement from the father’s attorney expressed, “Aaron did everything the law asks of a parent who is trying to protect his child. He trusted the courts. He followed every order. He waited for the process to work.”

“On Tuesday, a judge placed Vivian in his primary care, and she was supposed to come home to him that evening. She never did,” continued the statement, which also said how the young girl was “loved without limit by her father, Aaron, and by everyone whose life she touched.”

According to the Mail, it was the mother who filed divorce papers in 2022, only two years after the couple was wed.

The tragedy comes amid the high-profile Lindsay Clancy trial and is only one of several stories of mothers allegedly killing their own children. Though it is unknown if Savella had any interest in the case, it was reported after a mistrial was declared in the Clancy case that an Illinois woman who was following the murder trial allegedly killed her own two-year-old son, left him where her other children could find him, and then began cutting herself in the bathtub.

Reactions spoke to the sorry state of society, as some concluded, “These are moms that loved themselves more than they loved their kids.”
