Talk of an Iranian plot to kill President-elect Donald Trump prompted a response from the Islamist regime over claims they considered a “third-rate comedy.”
Threats posed to Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania, and West Palm Beach, Florida weren’t the only attempts on the GOP leader’s life according to the Justice Department. However, after charges were unsealed alleging one of their own was part of a murder-for-hire plot to kill the president, Iran’s foreign minister went beyond mere denial in a statement calling for “respect.”
“Remember the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran right after our President’s inauguration? Everyone knows who did it and why,” began a post on X from Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi referencing the Hamas leader who’d been assassinated at a guesthouse in Iran after attending the inauguration of President Masoud Pezeshkian.
“Now, with another election, a new scenario is fabricated with the same goal: as a killer does not exist in reality, scriptwriters are brought in to manufacture a third-rate comedy,” alleged the minister. “Who can in their right mind believe that a supposed assassin SITS IN IRAN and talks online to the FBI?!”

Friday before the election, the Justice Department had unsealed the charges of three individuals in an alleged murder-for-hire plot against Trump. While 36-year-old Jonathon Loadholt of Staten Island and 49-year-old Carlisle Rivera of Brooklyn had been arrested, 51-year-old Farhad Shakeri of Iran was said to have returned to the Middle East.
Fox News reported on a statement from Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei who had “categorically dismissed allegations that Iran was involved in attempts to assassinate former and current US officials.”
The statement went on to contend the claims were a “malicious conspiracy orchestrated by Zionist and anti-Iranian circles, aimed at further complicating the issues between the US and Iran.”
According to the DOJ, Shakeri provided statements “in recorded interviews with law enforcement agents” wherein he conveyed how the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps had tasked him with assassinations against U.S. and Israeli citizens. “In particular, Shakeri had informed law enforcement that he was tasked on Oct. 7, 2024, with a plan to kill President-elect Donald J. Trump.”
“Shakeri claimed he did not intend to propose a plan to kill Trump within the timeframe set by the IRGC,” the Justice Department release went on.
The foreign minister’s reaction to the allegations continued, “Here is a dose of reality worthy of consideration: The American people have made their decision. And Iran respects their right to elect the President of their choice. The path forward is also a choice. It begins with respect. Iran is NOT after nuclear weapons, period. This is a policy based on Islamic teachings and our security calculations. Confidence-building is needed from both sides. It is not a one-way street.”
In his own statement on Trump’s victory over Vice President Kamala Harris, Pezeshkian argued, “It does not matter to us who won the U.S. election because our country and system rely on our internal strength and a proud, great nation.”
Despite the claims, the president-elect’s opposition to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, better known as the Iran Nuclear Deal, plus his already announced appointments, readily showed the contrast in administrations.
A post on X Saturday from New York Rep. Elise Stefanik (R), tapped by Trump to be the United States Ambassador to the United Nations, stated, “The U.S. is ready for a return to President Trump’s MAXIMUM PRESSURE campaign against Iran. For too long, our enemies have been emboldened by the weakness of the Biden-Harris Administration. With President Trump in charge, Peace through Strength is back.”
