‘This is outrageous!’ United Nations selects Iran to lead Conference on Disarmament

The United Nations selected Iran, the world’s leading state sponsor of terror, to lead the U.N. Conference on Disarmament, drawing into question even more the use of the body.

The conference will take place from March 18-29 and from May 13-24, and it’s charged with “negotiating nuclear disarmament treaties and a slew of other weapons agreements,” according to the Daily Wire.

Keep in mind that Iran is on the verge of developing a nuclear weapon, with the U.N.’s top nuclear official, Rafael Mariano Grossi of the International Atomic Energy Agency, warning last summer that the Persian Gulf country has enough highly enriched uranium to build “several” nuclear weapons if it wants to.

“Though it may be drowned out due to all the other bad news out of the Middle East involving Iran, the regime is getting closer and closer to establishing itself as a threshold nuclear state,” said Behnam Ben Taleblu, a senior fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, in an interview with Fox News.

“If anything, Iran seems to be capitalizing on all the mayhem in the Middle East, mayhem which Washington has failed to curb or manage well, to press ahead in what appears to be a quest for the ultimate deterrent,” he added.

As noted by the Daily Wire, the U.N. disarmament conference is presided over each year by one of the 65 member countries.

“Each country serves as conference president for four working weeks. The presidency rotates among the members in alphabetical order. Other countries to serve as conference presidents this year are India, Indonesia, Iraq, Ireland, and Israel,” the outlet reported.

Masih Alinejad, an Iranian-American journalist, author, and women’s rights activist, was outraged over the development.

“This is outrageous! The regime that’s sent arms to Putin in Russia’s war against Ukraine, planned the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel, and provided missiles to Yemen’s Houthis to disrupt global shipping will be in charge of monitoring global nuclear weapons disarmament,” she said in a tweet. “The irony of ironies …. Islamic Republic is rapidly moving to develop nuclear weapons of its own.”

“What’s next? putting Putin in charge of Ukranian war refugee shelters? Putting Xi Jinping in charge of the protection of the Uyghurs? This absurdity cannot stand. We must hold @UN accountable. Autocrats are united against democracy and unfortunately they are using the UN to ridicule and weaken the international institutions,” the activist added.

In addition to backing the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas — which killed 1,200 Israelis while taking hundreds more hostage in the deadliest attack on Jews since the Holocaust — Iran just launched missiles and drones in neighboring Iraq, Syria and Pakistan.

There were plenty who agreed with Alinejad. Here’s a quick sampling of responses, as seen on X:
