Golfing legend Tiger Woods was arrested on suspicion of DUI this Friday after he got into a car crash near his home in Florida.
Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek said the golfer was driving a Land Rover at a high speed around 2:00 pm when he attempted to pass a truck that was hauling a pressure cleaner and was about to turn right into a driveway, according to ESPN.
“Woods’ SUV swerved to avoid the truck but clipped the back of the trailer,” ESPN reported. “The Land Rover flipped on its side and slid down the road. Woods climbed out of the passenger’s window to get out.”
While it’s not clear how fast Woods had been driving, Budensiek noted that the golfer’s car suffered damage, showing that he was going way beyond the 30 mph speed limit.

When the authorities arrived, they found Woods impaired from what they believed were either medications or drugs.
“The investigation started and initially, right off the top, it did appear that the driver of the Land Rover might be impaired,” Budensiek said.
Neither Woods nor the other driver was injured, but the golfer was arrested on suspicion of misdemeanor DUI with property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test. Woods reportedly passed a breathalyzer test but refused to submit to a urinalysis test for other drugs.
“He cooperated with the breathalyzer, and then the urine he wanted no part of,” Budensiek said.

Christine Weiss, a spokesperson for the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, later confirmed that Woods arrived at the local jail around 3:00 pm that afternoon and was released on bail later in the evening after spending at least eight hours behind bars.
“As far as being in the jail, we’re going to make sure he’s safe,” Budensiek said of Woods’ time in jail. “We’re not going to put him in general population. He’s not going to be with other inmates that can hurt him or try to capitalize on what he did. He’ll pay the price, but he’s not going to pay the price by getting punished in jail.”

President Donald Trump, a close friend of Woods, responded to the crash by saying how bad he felt for the golfer.
“I feel so badly,” the president said. “He’s got some difficulty. There was an incident, and that’s all I know. Very close friend of mine. He’s an amazing person, amazing man. But some difficulty.”

Woods is notorious for car problems, to put it lightly.
“In 2021, Woods was involved in a single-car rollover crash in Los Angeles, suffering a shattered ankle and two leg fractures in the incident,” according to Yahoo Sports.
“He was arrested under suspicion of driving under the influence in 2017 during a traffic stop in Florida, during which he appeared disoriented and woozy in police dashcam footage,” the outlet reported.
During the second incident chronicled above, Woods blamed his disorientation on “an unexpected reaction to prescribed medication” and later reportedly pleaded guilty to reckless driving.
